BROKEN FEATHER - 2015-12-18 11:01 AM
I just wormed all 3 of my horses and now all 3 of them are rubbing their tails. Has anybody ever had this happen?
What wormer did you use??
It sounds normal to me .. if you used Panacur or Safe Guard ... they do not kill the round worms ... it just puts them to sleep so they can poop them out .... worms are tickling their hiney and itching .. most worms are immune to this wormer since it is the oldest wormer ever used on horses .... and is the reason for a powerpack needing 10x the prescribed dose and then a dose of Quest and then within 30 days a dose of ivermectin to be a true powerpack ...
Ivermectin and Quest are slow on killing round worms since it works thru the horses blood system ... 7-10 days after worming you will see some tail itching or tail hair standing up at base of tail where they have been rubbing ....
Visually you can tell if a horse is wormy by the color of their poop ... green/yellow poop .. essentially no worms;
the more worms they have the darker poop will be ... from brownish to black when they poop ... the color change is from the worms poop inside the digestive tract .. (as you know worms live and multiply by sucking horse's blood)
Now is the time of year I will use Quest .. it is a 90 day wormer and will kill everything while they are eating hay in close quarters ...
then at Easter I will start using Ivermectin ... also on the following Holidays ... July 4th, Labor Day and Halloween .... that is a full year of 5 wormings ...
if you buy your wormer from Jeffers or one of the other online stores .. a full year will cost under $30 ....
a powerpack ends up around $100 for a one time worming ....
Foaling season is coming up ... so think of your broodmares ... guess when foaling date is .. and worm mare again 2 weeks BEFORE foaling to clean her out. Foal will eat some of her poop within 24 hours to start his good gut bacteria and digestive system for whole foods ...... last thing you want is to load foal up with worm eggs from a wormy mama ...
At 6 months...usually is my first foal worming ... I use Exodus (Pyrantel Pamoate ) to rid them of round worms since their life span has not had time to get bots or other type of worms and then start my Ivermectin program a month later ...
(I will also use Exodus on new horses and a week later Ivermectin before turning them out with the other horses.. it keeps from bringing in a new strain of worms etc etc )
