Ok guys I need advice on building an inexpensive(but not tacky looking) cover for the new pen that I had to move my horses to. Winter is just barely hitting here in CA(kind of) and I hate seeing them standing with zero shelter whatsoever. I was thinking of heavy wooden posts and plywood but want to see what you guys can come up with.

I've heard of people using car ports, then lining them with wood - I would love to try this although we would REALLY have to stake it down somehow to handle the 50 mph Kansas winds.

Not necessarily inexpensive but just a three-sided metal loafing shed with a six foot overhang works great. If you won't be staying at this location you can even build it on skids. We've built two that are very sturdy and have lasted a long time.
You do have to install kickboards on the inside if you use metal.

Here's a link for making windbreak fences which is probably what you need. Our horses won't go into a barn but will stand outside behind these when a bad cold front comes in or we have blizzard conditions. A good windbreak will get far if you cannot build a barn or have access to one.

If you have a company that makes the large cement fences they throw away the mess-ups and they make for sturdy sides. You just need to put together a top.
