I did do a search and found an old thread but really didn't have the info I needed. I am currently feeding a little stabilized rice bran with my oats/Curost. Its working really well but the ricebran is fortified with pre/pro biotics. This may be leading to an overgrowth of certain bacteria in the gut. I was advised to find ricebran that doesn't include probiotics. I happened to be in the feed store and saw a variety of oil supplements. Cocosoya, Rice bran oil, etc. Most are fed at 1-2 ounces a day but I have never fed oil so not sure which is best. THanks

I'd go with either olive oil or even plain ol vegetable oil. Flax would be a great option too if you have access to it.

When I was reading up on the oils, I believe corn oil in excess could cause inflammation. The nutrition book I have said canola oil was good.

I feed 30 ml daily of canola oil 1/2 cup of flax seed with their grain.

I have noticed with some of my horses I had to work up to the 30ml as they wouldn't touch their grain at the beginning.

With the flax and rice bran oils, you need to make sure it is cold pressed as it can go rancid.

I did try coconut oil for 30 days on some horses and I didn't notice any difference compared to the horses on canola. Canola oil is quite a bit cheaper then the other oils.

Some people use sunflower oil, this is one I would like to learn more about.

I feed flax seed oil by animed Puts the shine on. It's cold processed And is cost effective of you can't get whole flax. It does have soybean oil as well but he omega 3 to 6 ratio is still balanced.

I fed Cocosoya and really liked the shine it put on my horses but I quit because I wanted to simplify my feeding routine. I don't feel like I need it any more.

I feel like coco soya didn't do what I hoped(shined up their coats), not even by the time I was done with the whole gallon. :/ the flax oil is cheaper and I've seen results in their coats like nothing else whithin a week.

I feed Cocosoya for the omega vitamins 3,6, and 9 and also for the vitamin E. Helps with healthy hoof growth.

Soy can cause inflammation in some horses. You'll know it as your horse gets body sore. many have no problems but some do.

I'm trying out the Mega Oil from Oxy.  My old guy licks it up and that's half the battle with this guy!  I'm hoping for the best!

As do I, but I don't like it as a fat source. It gives mine some extra go... Just a lil warning. Lol

i personally would just buy the plain rice bran pellets. I am not a fan of the oils, since they are messy. I do give mine rice bran as he is a big boy and does well with a bit of extra fat.

Rice bran, and I believe rice bran oil contain gamma oryzanol, which is a natural muscle builder.   Something to think about if you're looking at switching.

They sure do market a lot of different oils for them not to have some merit. But who knows. Lol I decided to stay with my rice bran. It has a prebiotic which is fine and also 200mg of glucosamine. Who knows if it can be absorbed but can't hurt. It's a ricebran made just for senior horses.

I have fed the cocosoya and it helped some. I feel like you get more bang for the buck on weight & omegas with plain rice bran & ground flax.
