| Looking to start a new diet! What is working best for everyone? I don't have time to go to the gym. Doing work at the barn and exercising horses during the week is about the only exercise i get besides working 8-5 during the day.. I have also been feeling more tired than usual here lately so i want to start a vitamin that will help boost my energy & metabolism. Please give any suggestions that have help you! I wouldnt mind taking a diet pill or something of that sort, just don't want to spend a fortune on it! Thanks in advance:) |

Location: Louisiana | If you can't work out, you have to eat less. Most of us can maintain our weight on 2000ish calories/day. Track what you're eating now and go from there. Eating 1800 and maintaining? Start by cutting down to 1600. Don't go crazy and try to do a 1000 diet that will make you hungry. Cutting any liquid except water will decrease your caloric intake drastically! Lean meats, whole grains. I lost 35 pounds eating pasta almost daily. But I simply counted calories and made it work lol.
Now to to take my own advice... I've regained that 35 pounds plus some over the last 3 years. I need to lose 30 to be competitive again, but would like to lose 40-50. No time like the present!! |

| Abs are made in the kitchen! Clean up your diet...meaning whole foods not processed crap. More water and tea, less pop and cut the sugar intake. Seriously weight loss is 80% what you eat and 20% exercise.. and of course the caloric intake needs to be less than what you burn. You will find your energy levels increase naturally from fueling your body with better food. |

FOr me it was genetic. I did the Medifast program and am down 100 pounds and reached my goal weight as of yesterday!! Its not just shakes, there is a variety and it tastes great! Expensive, yes! |

| I have LOVED the 21 day fix program. Portion control is so important! Before I started this program I ate horribly, this forces me to eat a balanced diet with the appropriate portions. Super easy IF you prep your food for the week. My favorite part though is the workout. The workouts are 30 mins and I thought no way would I be getting in a decent workout in that short of time, but they are sneaky! During the workout I don't feel exhausted but they are very targeted to certain parts of the body that leave you feeling it!
You do not HAVE to order shakes or any kind of food. You can google it and find lots of info! :) I do not sell it just have really enjoyed the journey so far! |

I was not a fan of the shakes. I like real food. Medifast offers a variety of meal choices. Not just shakes. I had pancakes, meal bars in a million favors, soft bake, pasta, etc. you start the program by beating a meal every 2 hours. Then you eat one meal a day of your own. I never gave up my diet Dr Pepper and nothing in my lifestyle changed. I never over ate and didn't exercise. My blood work at the doctors was perfect every year. Nothing changed in my labs or blood pressure etc by losing 100 pounds. But I was not satisfied. This program works but it costs about 200 a month.

Location: NM | There are a lot of good diets out there that can help you lose weight. They all boil down to calorie reduction. Certainly cleaning up your daily diet is the best and most healthy way to do it. But what happens when you lose the weight, is the method you use sustainable? And that is where a lot of diets fail people.
I have been fortunate that I have never had to worry about weight growing up. Therefore, I never worried about what I ate and any weight I gained I could take off without much effort. Now that I am in my mid 30s my metabolism has slowed and I put on weight easier and it's harder to take off. I have to pay attention to what I eat these days and it's been hard because I have no self discipline and I really love food!
a couple years ago I was watching a morning news show and they brought on Dr. Krista Varady who is an associate professor of nutrition that has done numerous scientific studies on alternate day fasting. What caught my attention was that she had over 100 clients who had been on this way of eating for 8 years with success. So I got to googling and found out that there are numerous studies that show that fasting in addition to helping people lose weight has many health benefits. The basics are this: every other day you do a modified fast, 500 calories, usually consumed as one 400 calorie meal and a 100 calorie snack. You can change that up however you want to fit your lifestyle but eating it at breakfast is not recommended. Then on your other days you eat whatever you want, no calorie counting. When you get to your target weight you move to 3 days where you eat 1,000 calories. Other days you eat what you want. You may think that on your feast days you will over eat but most people, myself included, can't eat that much and I'm usually not that hungry on my feast days.
This works for me because I can have enough self control for one day. I tell myself that what ever it is that I'm wanting I'll have tomorrow. Originally I did the program without buying the book and did it easily for 6 months and lost 14lbs. Where I failed was I didn't have the recommendations for what to do when I got to my goal weight to maintain and so indropped off and the weight came back. This time I bought the book ($2.99 on my iPad) and 1,000 three days a week is totally sustainable for me. Also, I only fast 3 days per week and I schedule them around my social plans, usually Tuesday, Thursday and either Saturday or Sunday depending on what I'm doing. The book has lots of great recipes and TV dinner recommendations that I wish I would've had the first time around but I generally stick to a whole fruit and vegetable diet on my fast days and keep 100 cal popcorn and almond packs around for an evening snack. I fasted on Sunday, then ate normal yesterday which included roast beef with potatoes, wine and ice cream with chocolate syrup and now I'm fasting today. I use my fitness pal app to track and while my daily calorie count fluctuate my weekly calorie average is only 1,500. That equates to 1lb loss per week, a true alternate day fast schedule would likely give 2-3 lb loss per week but that just doesn't fit my schedule. Also the scientific studies done on this method of fasting show that the weight loss is not from water loss or muscle but actual fat.
So so if you are looking for something easy to do that still allows you to eat your favorite foods and doesn't involve costly shakes and supplements that can help you change your way of eating and how you deal with hunger, I recommend The Every Other Day Diet by Krista Varady. |

Location: North Dakota | I do like the Omnitrition program which is excellent if you want an easy to follow whole foods program. It is VERY strict but gets results. It's not shakes and mythical metabolism boosters. That is all a load of crap. Real food, real discipline, real exercise is the only way to go. You have to watch what you eat hardcore. Drink only water, tea, and coffee with as little cream/sweetener as you can stand (ideally go plain but I HATE plain tea and black coffee so have to add SOMETHING). Juice is just as bad for you as pop. Stay away from processed stuff and don't eat anything that's "diet" or "low fat" or whatever. Sugar is the NUMBER ONE THING that will prevent you from losing weight and feeling good. Cut that out, as close to 0 as possible, including sugar replacers because they're just as bad. Stevia drops are the least awful if you desperately need sweetener. Stick to small portions of whole foods. Keep it as fresh as possible. If you're eating things like yogurt get plain greek and add your own fruit and a dollop of honey. READ THE LABELS. There's sugar and nasty stuff hidden in almost everything. Stay away from grains as much as possible. The key is 3-6 SMALL portions throughout the day. For me, an easy way to start the day is a smoothie with frozen fruit, spinach, lemon, ACV, water, my liquid vitamins, and I put my cur-ost in there. I lost nearly 40lbs in 4 months but have gained a bit back over the holidays. Normally it's easy to maintain but I went ham lol. My goal is to lose a total of 130. |

I'm a fellow THMer!!!!! Its not a diet, its a way of life! You can eat just about anything and i've never been hungry a day of it. I was serious about it this spring, (before my little sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and my mom's death in October) and I had lost 20lbs in 8 weeks. It just melted off and I only lightly exercised. I never felt so good! I'm fixin to get back on it after the new year. Cant wait to see how I can transform my body!! |

I think a good prenatal vitamin is good for practically everyone. My wife feeds me "dynamite" vitamins, Omega 3s, and a probiotic. I don't think I need the probiotic, but Carol insists!
You mentioned "winter blues", which is pretty common. Read up on Vitamin D deficiency. A lot of people with a wide variety of complaints, including aches, pains, and "winter blues" feel a lot better when they get their vitamin D deficiency corrected. It's something worth doing at least once, just to give you an idea where your baseline is, and to gauge how much vit D you should be taking. I would guess that at least 75% of vit D levels I check on people are low or deficient. 2000IU is a pretty reasonable amount of vitamin D, but you never know...you might need quite a bit more than that.
Everyone preaches that we need protect ourselves from uv solar radiation, but a side effect of following those recommendations is vitamin D deficiency, because sunlight is needed to convert vit D to the most active form. Bottom line: it's a good idea to have it checked.

I try to cut way back on those things. I drink a paleo protein shake I get from Swansons vitamins with some almond milk. Sometimes I'll make a smoothie with spinach and fruit. I try to focus on getting more protein & fat, keep it natural, and avoid my trigger foods. Taking a probiotic. Also getting at least 7 hours sleep, and using progesterone cream. | Sure. Xyngular has a really good nutritional support group of vitamins available.
Just getting off the grains (anything made with flour, don't eat it), and keeping the carbs (sweets, fruits, etc), under 50 grams a day is very beneficial.
I'm doing 30 days of meats and vegetables. No cheese, no sugar, no dairy. Lots of my calories coming from oils (avocado, sun flower, coconut)
High fat, moderate protein, high fiber, low low carb. Read about ketosis.
Strawberries work awesome when you're craving sweets. One or two and I'm good to go. |

I would back off the fruit, back off all the grains. Take a good multivitamin to balance your minerals and vitamins out. Up the veggies, cabbage is a good source of fiber. Factor it into your carbs. If you need even more fiber, get metamusal (sp?). You can get really good fiber caplets over the counter. Strawberries have 1 gram of carbs, so they're pretty safe, you just have to keep track. Some people use Cool Whip as a low carb snack, but I eat too much, so stay away.
If you want to lose, you need to figure out how many grams of protein, fat, and carbs you need. It's pretty safe to say that you keep your carbs under 50. I keep mine at 25, or I start to feel puffy. I'm getting my mind ready to do 30 days of strict work and see if I can budge my weight, I'm plateaued and I'd like to lose 20 lbs.
I am going with 100 grams of protein, and 115 grams of fat. 100 grams of protein is not the same as 110 grams of meat in general. Beef, for example, is higher in protein per oz than chicken. You just have to check the label and add it in.
You can google ketosis calculator and figure it out. There's a good one here, http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ It will help you figure out your requirements, based on your nutritional needs and goals.
Weight loss is just math, just like weight gain. There's some really good aids out there to make sure you stay healthy when making dietary changes. Xyngular is good, and there's some others worth checking into. |

| I have followed this book and it has been the only thing that works at keeping me on track. I started using it 3 years ago and every time I feel the need to lose 10-15lbs I open up the book and start looking at what I should be consuming. It has a variety of options for you to eat (breakfast, lunch, supper, snacks) and it gives you the freedom to pick and choose what you want to eat. I am fixing to start back up again in a few days; as soon as I can get to the grocery store ;) He also has a 7 Day detox and I've lost 7lbs in the first week doing that (water weight, of course!)
There are also groups on facebook ("Shredder Nation" being one of them) that people check in and talk about how their doing and what they do to stay motivated.

Location: Southeast Louisiana | I cannot do portion control. Also, due to the way I work, I can't really prepare food enough to follow a diet. I just do low carb. I can eat as much as I want of proteins. I did good, once I got used to which snacks I could have, and got a regular routine of foods I can order (or make when I'm home) for meals. Of course, I don't have cholesterol or high blood pressure problems. Doing the low carb thing is nearly impossible if you have those health issues. So, that's what has been working for me.
I knew a couple of guys who lost a lot of weight eating the same things the rest of the family was eating, just small portions. They measured everything. It's all in trying different diets and finding a program you can stick with. Any of them will work, if you follow the diet. |

I agree with the 21 day fix program! Yes it does have a daily 30 minute workout it comes with, but the eating program is amazing. It breaks everything down for you what to eat, etc. and simplifies it. It has really helped my husband and myself to learn what to eat and in the right amounts.
On another note, if you are looking for shakes and stuff. Check out Herbalife. I have a lot of friends that have been very successful with their shakes. |

Location: Northern MN | Oh what I wouldn't do to have Phen-Fen again...I lost 80 pounds and had to force myself to eat. Even for 3 months. I never had any bad effects from it. |
