So at month 5 i gave one of my mares her first pneumabort k vaccine. My mares live at my parents while i am at school an hour from home during the week. my mom has horse sense but we've never done this before so we're learning as we go. i noticed a small area of swelling in the first injection site and thought she may have reacted slightly but thought nothing of it. I gave her her second 7 month injection a week ago and am home today for the holiday and noticed she appears "sore" all over and that the side i gave her her second vaccine on is significantly swollen. she isnt running a fever. I have been in touch with my vet and he didnt seem too concerned as he thought it is either a reaction to the vaccine or she is abscessing at the injection point due to whatever reason. said i should give 2 grams of bute this morning and watch her closely for any improvements. Has anyone ever dealt with a mare reacting to these vaccines??? i feel horrible, my other mares havent reacted at ALL to this vaccine so i dont understand. This mare has had two other colts too and has had the vaccine before.
Here is a picture of her swelling

Yes. Our previous mare could put her head down to eat after recieving the shot in her neck, got so swelled up and sore. I had to give the remainder of her shots in her hindquarters. My current infoal mare only got a knot on one of her penumabort injections in the neck, but she's tough to give a shot in the hind quarters. Now I just bute her the day of when I know I will be giving her the shot

I no longer give any Ft Dodge vaccines. (Note: They aren't Ft Dodge anymore. They are Zoetis). I've had and heard of so many reactions to Ft. Dodge/Zoetis vaccines, I won't use them. I don't even try to give Pneumabort K because of reactions and aborted fetus' after giving the shots. I'll take my chances. So far I've had no aborted fetus' from rhino.

There are 2 or 3 other vaccine makers out there. I use them.

Hot packs will help the reaction site. Sorry she's feeling poorly.

I have never had a mare have a reaction to the pneumabort shot, thankfully. I have also never lost a foal to rhino either and have always vaccinated religiously on the 5, 7, 9 schedule, so I am afraid to stop now. Especially because I haul the mares back and forth to several facilities to be bred and they come in contact with lots of horses there and my horses I ride come in contact with so many horses outside of my property. If I wasn't hauling around a bunch, I would take the risk of not vaccinating, I am not not willing to do that in my current situation.

I do not haul horses in and out of my parents at all, they will leave to be bred and for vet work but that is it, so, im not really all that concerned, i just do it to be safe and many stallion owners require it.

I have to agree. We have actually never given that shot in 15 yrs of raising them. Granted they are out in pasture and we don't just dump new mares in, but we have never had a mare abort because if Rhino.

I switched to Prodigy after reading that there were less chances of reactions using this vaccine.
