What are some training paths you guys take go get your younger horses or any horse solid on the pattern . Like as in they know exactly where to be at all times without you having to guide their every move ? I have a 5 yr old I love go pieces but I'm having trouble with her starting her turns too soon .. I've been just slowing her down & making her go up in the hole before she turns but obviously with speed it gets hard to keep her from getting scotchy & staring to turn too soon . Any advice ? I want her solid & to understand where to be . My guess would be go slow until she understands exactly where she needs to be

Just keep hauling them! Don't be afraid of speed. THe faster you go they wil fumble and then figure it out. Try and get them to as many places as you can. If you can do a time only do it, but make an ACTUAL run. Teach the horse that they have to focus and do it right the first time.

Sounds like you can probably go a little faster.....speed is going to help her get around that barrel. Practicing the same body language whether you are running or walking through the pattern will help also. You can build confidence with consistency.

This! Be consistent, I was having a little trouble on a colt two years ago. Rode with Marlene Mc Rea for an hour and had her jumping me about my inconsistent body language. Keep yourself very consistent. Ride up in that hole with a body language telling your horse I want you "right here".

Thanks guys ! We are just getting back to trotting & loping again from her being off with an abscess for over a month . I'm trying hard to keep consistent & really getting her go until my leg to at or by the barrel before she turns . She started hitting a lot of barrels last year from turning too soon . She also gets anxious about it & actually ducked off the second barrel on my last run in September .. I quit running her after that & slowed her down . A week before she did that she ran two days in a row at a big jackpot & won over $600 .. So it's hard to keep her confident & not so nervous I think is the biggest part.
