So, I have not been on here in forever so feel a little guilty about a "Hey, I need info" post.  But, my 18 year old daughter is moving to Killeen, TX and am just looking for any info you can give me on the area.  Good, bad, or otherwise.  She will not be taking a horse with her just yet but may in the future.  I am hoping to just get some info to help me be able to relax a little about sending my kiddo across the country to a strange place.  Thanks!!

I lived there 4 years. Left in 2014. What is she going there for? Killeen can be sketchy. Copperas cove, harker heights and temple aren't bad. Does she have horses?

She is recently married and moving there because her husband is stationed at Fort Hood. She does have horses but won't be bringing any with her just yet. Her hubby is more than likely being deployed in June for 9 months so she will come home while he is gone and then possibly bringing a horse with her after that. I am not sure how she will do without her horses...they are kind of her sanity. Especially, since she will be so far away from any friends or family. It just makes me nervous to have her so far away and not know anything about where she is going to be.

I was just there visiting my husband before he was deployed in Nov. It wasn't a bad town and its close enough to austin which was really fun.
The highway/expressway was interesting to figure out, and the cops were not nice! I got my first ever speeding ticket and it was my birthday.
Killeen was kinda dirty in some places but my husband said that's normal for a military base town.
Hope she enjoys it! I really liked Copperas Cove they have a neat movie theater there.

Big horse country out there. Ft Hood has the only mounted Calvary left so she may be able to board on base. Hamilton, Stephenville, Glen Rose, Alvarado, Waco all have very active indoor arenas. Temple has TAMU medical school at Scot and White which is one of the finest hospitals in the world. To me all the towns around there are pretty nice especially Temple. Every town has less affluent areas too--just avoid them. I have spent a little time in Temple but really have just driven through the other areas.

I have lived here my whole life. I personally would not live IN Killeen. There are several smaller towns around that would be much nicer (safer) I live in Kempner (Copperas Cove and Kempner kinda run into each other. I work at the Jr High in Copperas Cove) I can be in Killeen in less than 15 minutes. Kempner has a population of about 3000. There are several local riding clubs in the area and plenty of big races within an hours drive.
You can PM me if she needs any help with anything.
Has she found a place yet? If not I am more than willing to help with what areas are nice and safe and which ones I won't even drive through after dark.
