| Bought a mare about 7 months ago, vetted fine when i bought her, besides she was WAY over weight and needed to loose weight before competition. Well, really she's been on the back burner but still legged up. (I've only ran her maybe 6 times) well lately I've noticed her breathing not being where it should be.
Vet can't come out till Monday, so until i thought id ask BHW.
I rode her yesterday and her breathing was just terrible i had to get off. No coughing or runny nose. No fever. but she is weezing really bad, nostrils flared, breathing through her mouth more than her nose. but no runny nose what so ever, normal sweating.
She healthy as far as I'm concerned, feels good, looks good, i haven't ran her sense october but she has been constantly rode, long trot, loping circles. nothing over excessive. but like i said, vet comes out monday but just wanted to see what everyone else thinks.
She runs around the pasture and is fine, only when i ride her.

| Horses can't breathe through their mouth, but I've seen some with a bad case of heaves that will open their mouth while trying to get air.
Is your hay dusty or have any amount of mold in it? Is the horse living around chickens or ducks?

| Her mouth is completely open the entire time, heavily breathing, wheezing and gasping for air. No, her hay and feed are fine. no chickens or ducks, barn is clean and stalls are always fresh. water is good. No coughing or runny nose, nor a fever.

Location: NE Texas | They say horses can't breathe through their mouth, but I have seen it happen, or at least one try to breathe through his mouth. He couldn't breathe at all, either way. Spent over $5000 at the vet in 3 months and exceeded all medical options and treatments. Lots more information on the Product Research forum. After the last vet offering to write me a note to put my horse and telling me he'd likely suffocate when hot weather got here, I began researching. My research led me to www.nouvelleresearch.com and Dr. Tom Schell. After several emails back and forth consulting about my horse and me being skeptical at best, he asked me to give him two weeks, and I took the leap of faith and did it. All I had to lose was a bit more money. If this didn't work, I was about to be faced with a tough decision on a very talented young horse. Taking this leap of faith was the best thing I have ever done for my horse. In two weeks I went from a horse who couldn't take a deep enough breath to even cough to a horse who I was back to exercising lightly. In 30 days he'd done a complete turnaround and I was back to riding. I used the EQ Total Support, the EQ Immune & Repair, and the EQ Adapt & Calm. Stayed on this combination for 90 days, then give the EQ Total Support and EQ Adapt & Calm daily for maintenance. I'd have to say my horse continues to improve. Love the Cur-OST team and is something both myself and my horses will never be without!
The pictures below are March 23 before we started the Cur-OST. The second pics are April 24, 31 days later. This horse gets a half scoop of whole oats once daily just to mix his Cur-OST in, with a cup of BOSS, and alfalfa twice a day. That's it.

| Does she breathe loud when you do exercise her? I wonder if she has a paralyzed flapper?
Is it cold where you are? Do you exercise indoors or out?

| im in GA. Yes only when i work her. she runs around the pasture with the other horses and she's fine. Yesterday was 60 outside, kinda humid but not terrible. ALL we did yesterday was lope circles, immediately she is wheezing and huffing and puffing for air, i continued to lope circle thinking maybe she would stop and of course it didn't.
I'm going to see if i can find a video of what she sounds like, i would ride but don't want to hurt her incase she has internal bleeding or something crazy like that.

If she is open mouth breathing when you ride her she is probably displacing her soft palate. Here's an example... https://youtu.be/ZLBWuKR3oUY

| Mouth is open like that, but moving around. making the sounds that the gelding in the video i posted was making.
When i bought this mare in the summer she didn't do this, only when it started getting cold.

| Just a heads up, it is anatomically impossible for a horse to breathe through it's mouth. | |

Location: NE Texas | The Cur-OST products will help your horse and eliminate the respiratory issues. My horse was displaced all 4 times we scoped upon insertion, however the displacement was a result of the mucous, phlegm, and a glottis that was vascular, inflamed, and heavy as a result. The displacement was a result of the underlying condition, not the cause. One vet wanted to perform the surgery to correct the displacement which would not have fixed the issue. Glad I did my homework before taking that leap! I too experienced what appeared to be mouth breathing.....panting is what it looked like, and we had it at rest, prior to exercise. In 30 days, I had a new horse, and wish I'd gone this direction first before loading my horse with steroids, antibiotics, and immune builders. Treat the source of the issues and you can't image the improvement your horse will make even way beyond the respiratory issues you're experiencing!

| Very true. Displacing is commonly a result of inflammation and irritation. Physical or functional issues maybe to blame too but like I said irritation and inflammation can also contribute to displacing.

| Vet came out, said nothings wrong with her.checked lungs, said lungs are fine, lunged her said she sounded fine, i rode her, said she sounded fine. he pulled blood for infection it came back clean. he said she could have been displacing before but the problem with horses that don't do it every time is, exactly that, they don't do it every time. So he took some more blood and said to try to video her if she makes the odd sound again. | |
