Ok so I'm about to send in registry papers on an older filly I have (3yo) that I bought unregistered. I was wondering opinions on adding initials/ ranch initials on the beginning of reg names.

Yay or nay...

Sire: Astonishing Fuel (Fuel Charger X Ona Ole High)
Dam: Firewater Annie (FWF X Valid Miss Red)

1. Fuel This Fire
2. Fuel This Firewater
3. Red Fuel On Fire
4. Fuelin My Fire

Any suggestions welcome. All names above are open. Have not decided on the initial thing yet..

My horse's registered name has ranch initials in it (I did not name him) Doesn't really bother me either way. What does bother me is if the name itself is just horrible in general.

I do initials in front of all my foals I raise. I also freeze brand. I figure if I put all the blood, sweat, tears and $s into them I would like people to know where they came from without having to view the horses papers. I've never had anyone complain about brands. Actually when I see a brand I think someone had enough pride in the animal to permanently put their name on them so to speak.... I really don't know of any great, well known breeders that don't brand.

I think it is senseless and lazy of the breeder doing initials on a name ....

The same way with branding your goofy looking meaningless brand on a horse ...
it just destroys the looks of the horse and distracting to a future buyers eyes ....

I associate this with the fad of people tattooing themselves and ruining their looks..
and maybe their future job possibilities ...

I have backed off buying a lot of horses
because I did not want to mess up my day while looking at the stupid brand
or trying to remember the stupid initials on the name ...

If I buy an unbranded horse and I or my shipper come to pick it up and you have hastily
shaved and freeze branded it .... the horse will get to stay at your barn!!

Very few breeders have enough winning ways to have the brand recognition
that might influence a buyer to favor that horse over another equally bred
horse that is unbranded ...

OP...
you cheated .. you edited and added the lower half of your post after I read it ...

High on Firewater. Ok it's not one of your choices. Lol
It's your horse so add the initials if you want. But just remember, if the horse is a flop your initials will forever be on that flop's papers. ;)

Wow never knew it was that big of a deal. I haven't ever had anyone have a problem with branding maybe HUGE brands but normal size no. Why do you think it's lazy and senseless to do initials ? Just curious :)

I'll check to see if that's available. I like that one. I also considered the flop issue XD I told my hubs it could be awesome or it could be a dud lol. The barrel trainer really thinks she has a lot going for her. She sure has fire to her lol.

I'm not a fan of initials BUT I definitely would not put initials on something I was not the breeder of. That's like taking credit for someone else's plan (or accident).

I see branding for identification. We have not branded anything yet but our brand is registered with the state and the plan is to brand our stock. I sold a gelding that I am disappointed we didn't get our brand in time. We raised, trained, and seasoned him. I wouldn't rebrand a horse. I have one that is VF branded and I didn't buy him as a baby so I couldn't stick a brand on him.

It depends. While I wouldn't stick initials in a name of one I didn't breed, they do serve a purpose, as do brands:
A) It's easier to come up with names because you can use names already taken if you put initials at the beginning.
B) As a breeder, if you raise nice horses people DO look for certain brands if they've had a good experience in the past.
C) I branded our pony. Why? Because people steal ponies. Very few ponies are branded, our pony is getting fairly famous so I want to encourage people to remember him and deter an idiot from taking him.
D) Originally we started branding because we had a lot of white faced sorrels. In the late 80's horse meat was over $1 per pound and horses were being stolen left and right. It deterred theft.
E) If you are offended by my pride in the product we create and our brand irritates you...maybe you aren't the type of person that deserves one of our animals anyhow.

I love the idea of a breeder branding and putting initials on their animals. It's a great anti theft device, it shows where that animal came from so later on you can track the original owner down, and it says that the breeder had pride in that animal. We put ranch initials and brands on all of our cattle and will do so with our horses come our first foal crop.

I would however NOT suggest putting your ranch initials in front of an animal you didn't breed, that is just taking credit for something you didn't do. But as for a brand, I see no problem in branding your new horse. This way you can identify your horse if he should ever go missing.

I love looking at brands and seeing where an animal came from. Lots of history in brands. I absolutely LOVE my mares brand and people know her by it.

I'm think Fuel this fire is taken.......you need to make sure none of the names are taken with AQHA before you try to register the filly

I get this BUT on the other hand, you can't ride papers and I bought her hardly halter broke so I think the peeps that "make" the horse should get just as much credit. If she turns out to be jan up it won't be just because her papers say so :) on the other hand lol if she turns out a dud....lol

Your name will be on the registration, and when people look back at previous owners your name will be there too, so you'll get the credit if the horse turns out to be amazing.
