First item you need is some frozen colostrum on hand to give baby within 8 hours of birth ... if you wait longer the mucus in the digestive system closes off the needed immune system portion of the colostrum and the foal will not live but a few days .. this is imperative!!
And 24-36 hours collect a handful of mares poop and force it in foals mouth to get his solid food gut bacteria started ... all he needs to swallow is a big tablespoon full ...
The best people that I know close to your area is Garrett and Lisa Kuhlman that probably know where you can find a nurse mare ... possibly from an embryo reproductive vet clinic .. give them a call ..

Next best place would be SW STALLION STATION in Elgin Tx ....
GOOD LUCK!!

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | Thank you everyone for your quick replies and prayers. My mare had emergency surgery (thank you Dr. Honnas) in August for an abscess that did not surface and ended up killing part of her coffin bone. We were given a 20% chance of recovery. She was doing great up until the first of October when we discovered that there was bone infection. We were advised and to put our beloved mare down on October 9th. I knew the night before her repro vet came that it was time to let her go (lots of prayers and tears). My husband refused to put her down on my birthday and said we would give her two more days. Let's just say I had a few harsh words for my husband as I had already prepared to let her go. By the grace of God and Dr. Hall this mare did a 180 in three days. Her foot still looked abnormal but the abscesses stopped and she was trying to trot on her bad leg. This mare had been stall bound since August and mid October was running out of her stall if you let the door open. As of last Saturday (2 weeks to go till due date) she has start abscessing out of her front good foot. She is now laying down all day. She still is eating, drinking and pooping normal. This might sound ridiculous but when I look into her eyes she is telling me to hang on that this baby is just moving into position and she is just ready for him to come already. She is now bagging up and the baby has moved down. I am now just preparing myself for the what if's? This has been a journey and words can not express how much we have loved this mare and what she has done for my family. We will continue to pray as it is her will and God's plan and I am only here to help assist her in anyway possible. |

We had a mare that had stifle issues and would get really sore the last couple weeks of pregnancy and lay down a lot and then as soon as she foaled she was great, would never know she was ever sore. She produced the prettiest best minded colts, was the toughest decision ever to put her down but she just didn't bounce back with her last colt like she did the others and like you said we could just tell she was telling us it was time. |

Oh this just breaks my heart for you and her. Like someone else said, God is still in the miracle business, and my prayer is for this baby to get here healthy and then Momma to do a complete turnaround. I hope this beloved mare is around for your family for many more years. . . . |

But, raising an orphan can be rewarding if you can't find a nurse mare. Tiring, beyond tiring, but very rewarding. The products available make for nice babies. Both of my orphans were tanker babies and grew up into fine horses. |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | Thank you for everyone's thoughts and prayers. She never moved from her spot Friday, but would sit up to eat and drink. I flushed her foot and leg again with warm water and Epsom salt then a flush with hydrogen peroxide. Such a great girl, she lets me do everything and then just gives me a sweet nudge and rub when I sit with her. Saturday morning I went to the barn early and there she was standing up and staring at me as to say where is my breakfast. I am not sure how long she had been up, but she had pooped in several spots around her stall. She laid for most of the day yesterday and as of today she is still laying down but has moved around some. We have seen belly movement so I am staying positive! I will keep everyone posted.

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | She is holding out. Still bagging, but no waxing or dripping. We are definitely getting softer. She has not gotten up on her feet since Sunday morning. Positives, she is still eating and drinking and nickering when her friends walk by her stall to go out to pasture. I gave her a good body message last night and another couple of bags of super soft thorough bred shavings. Staying positive |

Please don't be offended by this, but I would like to suggest putting something in your subject line to grab the attention of Texans that may just browse the homepage. I think if you called out on a group of people you might be better able to find a nurse mare. best of luck |

Location: wherever my daughter's running | I am no help as far as the nurse mare. I certainly will keep her, the foal and you in my prayers. I am a real softie for the mares that carry a foal. It is not silly about the eyes. You know her better than anyone. I always have depended on their eyes to help me make those tough decisions. Hugs to you. |

When was her last breeding date.... this will put you into a more likely birthing date ..
Keep her laying sitting up on her breastbone even if you have to prop her up with bales of hay to keep her laying flat to a minimum ... water on the lungs and pneumonia happens when a horse is down and most vets will give you a 3day or 6day being down as a maximum for the horse to ever recover ... since it also affects the mobility of their legs to make that surge to try to stand up and legs are too weak to handle her weight or to balance her ...
Prayers to you and GOD BLESS ... |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | Thank you for all the ideas. She was able to stand Saturday and Sunday for a bit. As of yesterday she has only sat up. The hay bale idea sounds like a winner. She was bred on February 19th and is actually due on January 25th (Monday). The three other babies she blessed us with all came a week prior to their due date. Obviously this will be a different scenario given her health situation.
I have attached an old picture of her and my daughter (9yrs old at the time) winning the 2D at a +300 WinMore race and FWOTR winning the race.

| You might contact Royal Vista if you haven't already. When we lost our foal out of a recipient mare they had been contacted by someone who lost a mare so we shipped our recip mare straight to them.
Broodmares are amazing. We lost a mare two years ago, and I believe she hung on as long as possible, and actually delivered a couple of weeks earlier than she normally does. It was like she waited for me to go out and do chores so I could see her lay down and deliver. Hopefully your mare can hold on and give you a healthy foal. And I also hope she will be able to get up once she's not carrying the extra weight. |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | We are the same. Eating and drinking very well, but she will not get up. She does sit up for 10-15 minutes at a time and then lays down for a couple of minutes. These are the pictures from last night after we flushed and redressed her foot. I am still not sure why after a week we still have a pooling of drainage coming from the bottom of her foot. BTW, for those wondering I am in routine contact with two vets that have been part of this journey.
I have a niece who will be born C-Section tomorrow who will be named after one of my dearest aunts who passed away from cancer tomorrow morning - Bonnie Grace. Maybe my mare is holding out until she is born. We will be getting another cold front in a day or two so I will be paying very close attention to that as well.
Thanks again for all of your prayers and suggestions for my mare. |

Location: Feeding those that need me | My heart is breaking for you. I just lost my childhood mare of 12+ years yesterday and find a nurse mare for her baby. I hope your baby ends up as lucky as ours. Our vet gave us the number of a nurse mare farm in Hugo, OK - a decent drive, but they actually bring the mare to you. We ended up hooking up with someone whose mare's baby had to be put down on Sunday in Whitesboro thanks to the Nurse Mare/Orphan Foals facebook group. You may try that, but I didn't see any others in Texas on there yesterday. I will add to this thread if I hear of any other possibilities. I am so sorry this is happening to you and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | One of my three vets told me I had to get her up last night. So my family and I man handled her and were only able to get her up for one minute before she collapsed to the other side. She was exhausted, but still ate her alfalfa. I brushed her and doctored the couple of spots were she had worn the skin.
The best news is, she is UP THIS MORNING!!!!!!!! Can someone post a video for me? |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | No baby yet. I am hoping we are still baking. She has gotten up one more time on her own, but other than that she is mainly laying sitting up. She is still perky and always hungry! I swore with the 40 degree temperature drop last night, but when I saw she had not waxed or dripped I knew we were still not destined for the grand entrance of this baby.
I did receive confirmation from A&M that she could still go until full labor even if she does not get back up. I am hoping this is worst case scenario, but we still have infection draining from her foot and leg. I pray that she does not abort after everything she has gone through.
I did get some great advice on getting a goat to help as a substitute nurse mare as well as a name for a farrier after we pull through this ordeal (this is my positive thought for the day).
Thank you to everyone for sticking with me and all the wonderful comments, suggestions, pm's and number one PRAYERS! |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | Sorry I did not respond this weekend. We had a two day high school rodeo two hours from our house. I had someone feeding her and taking care of her for the day time, but I did not feel like I could stay the night away. I came home Sunday morning at 3:30 and no baby. I got her up for 20 minutes and rebidded her stall (I am picky that way :) took a shower laid down for two hours and then got back up to take care of her before I left for the Sunday rodeo performance.
Came home last night and we just do not seem to be progressing. Found my daughters stethoscope and tried to find a heart beat. Not sure that we really heard anything outside of gut noises. My daughter swore she heard a heart beat. Redressed her leg and the good news was we had no infection in her bandages. We are able to get her up for 15-20 minute intervals, but she will not do it on her own.
We have made the decision to call out the vet tomorrow if she still has not foaled tonight and to verify that we still have a live foal. I am exhausted, but I am sure Reckless would tell me "You think you're tired"! I am still hoping their is life still within her and she is just baking him/her extra special. |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | Sorry guys still no baby (and yes, yesterday was official due date). She did get up several times last night as if to get into position. Both my daughter and I took turns getting up and checking on her. The vet comes out this afternoon, so maybe he can give me an idea.
Here's a pic I snook in when I got home from work. "A girl and her horse".

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | Ok no baby, but ultrasound confirmed the bun is still baking!!!!! He thinks we are very close maybe two days to a week - he mentioned he did not have a crystal ball (ugh).
My thoughts are she will definitely have the baby now because my husband left this morning and will be gone for almost a week (seriously-last hunting trip).
I want to thank everyone again for all their prayers and well wishes as this is truly a miracle. I will keep everyone posted and hopefully have some baby pictures to share very soon!
On another note, I do not have facebook, but Ghostrider mentioned a group for nurse mares. I had a friend try, but it said they were a closed group. So excuse my ignorance, but how do you get to join?

We are doing our best to get her up at least 3 to 4 times a day for 10-20 minutes. I pray this baby comes soon and gets some weight off of her. Obviously this birth will be very different from the others, but I know God has a plan and whatever the outcome it will be.
My vet and I have spoken about several outcomes and I have been trying my best to keep positive and have strength for both her and my daughter.

She had that same determination back then. How old is she? Y'all are in my thoughts so many times during each day---I know it's weighing on you and your family as well as Reckless, but know your supporters are holding you up in prayer. |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | No baby to report yet, but we were able to extract 32 ounces of milk last night. If anybody has ever milked a mare by hand you will know this is no easy job. Thank goodness Reckless has a whatever you need to do attitude about all of this. The milk was white and sweet and she has gotten soft and elongated.
I slept at the barn last night outside her stall trying to be quiet as a mouse, but to no avail we are still without a baby. Hoping she decides to share this baby with us today or tonight!
Thanks again everyone for checking in. I won't lie to you, I am very nervous about this birth. I have had some amazing conversations and tutorials with several individuals, but this one has me very nervous as I have never had to assist if needed during the birthing process. Thank heaven for BHW and so many wonderful people!!!! |

Location: Keeping up with the numbers! | After no further progression and Reckless dripping with vaginal secretion we made the decision to take her to A&M. Our vets were concerned with the possibility of a breach birth and Reckless's health condition. The ride was very difficult for her. After 30 minutes of arrival Friday night she began to colic. In addition her foot began separating.
It has taken two days, but this morning she finally has relaxed and become more comfortable. Her vitals are back to normal and her breathing has settled.
Her milk tested at a 35 and it needs to be at a 40 before a mare generally delivers. We have made several trips as we have been told she will probably need to be put down after delivery.
A&M is choosing not to induce at this time and feel like we could still be a couple of days out. They are trying to get as many calories in her to keep the baby healthy for delivery. We have been able to confirm she is not breach and the babies vitals are good.
I would like to thank Ghostrider for forwarding my name to a wonderful lady in GA who unfortunately lost her foal Friday. After discussing making the 16 hour one way trip to GA, my vets and I decided we would stick with a nurse goat and the possibility of introducing bucket feeding. A wonderful friend found me a nanny goat "Lulu" and we have been milking her three times a day to keep her wet.
Thanks again everyone for thinking of my sweet mare and my family! I know she is in good hands at A&M. We are trying our best to stay positive, but I will be honest it is killing me not having her here with me.

This just breaks my heart. I am like Jake, I was hoping and praying for Reckless to return to a healthy state and be a wonderful mom to this baby. God performs miracles everyday, but if He has decided to add Reckless to His four-footed angels up there then I pray for her to be as comfortable as possible until that time. She's fought valiantly for y'all and for her baby----what a treasure you have in her. Please keep us updated, and we'll continue to hold all of you up in prayer. |

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for thinking of Reckless and her foal for the last two weeks. This was a very long journey and my family has so many people to thank for their support. Unfortunately, A&M was not able to save Reckless and her foal.
I do want to share with everyone that is was a colt and he was absolutely beautiful. Sorrel with four white stockings just below the knees, a gorgeous white blaze and a flaxen tail.
A big thank you to all once again.

 A Somebody to Everybody

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for thinking of Reckless and her foal for the last two weeks. This was a very long journey and my family has so many people to thank for their support. Unfortunately, A&M was not able to save Reckless and her foal. I do want to share with everyone that is was a colt and he was absolutely beautiful. Sorrel with four white stockings just below the knees, a gorgeous white blaze and a flaxen tail. A big thank you to all once again. The Lawson's RIP Reckless Run O Toole and Reckless on Firewater - you will forever be in our hearts.
I am so so very sorry for the lost that you and family are going threw, wish I could do something to make you feel better, hugs to you |

 My Heart Be Happy

Location: Arkansas | I'm sorry doesn't begin to cover how I feel for you and your family. Since you've been posting I felt like I got to know Reckless, and my heart hurts so much for y'all. God didn't want to split her and that beautiful boy up so He has them both in His green pastures now. What a blessing to know she's not in pain any longer. You and your family, the doctors, and Reckless did all that could be done----please find comfort and peace in that knowledge. Much love and prayers for peace being sent your way. . . . |

Location: Texas | I too have followed this thread, but haven't yet posted. My heart breaks for you and your sweet mare and foal! I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through. Thanks for loving sweet Reckless unconditionally and doing everything you could do for her and that baby. I'm so sorry they didn't make it. As tears stream down my face, it just seems so unfair. You are right God has a purpose. Prayers and hugs for many tough days ahead! |
