| My little mare was hit by a pickup 3 days ago. People not hurt, and she is stable and home as of yesterday morning. It looks like he hit her right in her rump and from what the vet can feel and the couple X-rays they took (medial & lateral hock, fetlock) she can't see any fractures. There is a bit of grinding in her hock but know obvious displacement anywhere. As near as we all can tell it's just soft tissue and bone bruising and such. We are all kind of flying blind, cause most horses don't survive that kind of thing around here. Does anyone have any ideas or tips for rehab?
Right now, she's on a bute regime, stall rest, hand walking when the time comes. Magnetic sheet on the way, then I've got chiro and massage lined up when the time comes.
We are hoping there are no "surprises" we didn't catch and she is perky and getting up and down a lot. We all kind of think that wouldn't be the case if she had a fracture. She's not the most stoic of creatures.
If anyone has any ideas please feel free to share. And FYI, just cause I know someone will say it, yes she's being treated at one of the best equine clinics in the state.
Thanks in advance. |

Location: Where I am happiest | Sounds like your on the right track. Just remimber time is your best friend. Only thing I would watch is the bute. It will tear her stomach up. Talk to your vet about previcox. Maybe you could alternate the 2 and after a couple weeks just go with the previcox. |

| As of right now, the bute is for 5 days. I'm gonna keep an eye on her and will treat stomach issues if they do arise. She's never had any prior so she's got that going for her.
I was thinking previcoxx as well, just wasn't sure if it was appropriate in this situation. I've used it on the arthritic horses though and was pleased. I'm of the thought that if we can keep her pain controlled long term and keep the swelling down, her recovery is gonna be faster. But I've never had to deal with something so serious in a horse either |

| The other thing I'm curious about and have zero experience with is swimming. Hen and IF she recovers to riding sound, I wonder if that wouldn't be good option. Does anyone have experience with that post injury. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Is their vehicle insurance paying for it? I'm not sure how that works with horses. I live in open range ranch country and smucked my uncle in law's cow Tues coming home in the dark pulling a heavy trailer. I got slowed down as much as I could and just tapped her hip but she is sore and has a slight limp. I notified my Uncle in law and we are just watching her for now. My insurance would pay for her but they would also take her from him. He doesn't want that if she has a chance to come out of it. It would be a good idea to run all the diagnositics you could on her (x rays and ultrasounds), really check her pelvis and have a chiro/massage out as well. If their insurance will pay for it, they may require all this done right away as to prove it isn't something she did after the accident. Insurance likes to get out of paying for things. |

| Our pasture is actually in city limits, so at the end of the day we are liable. Even though it wasn't really anyone's fault. Deer busted a hole in the fence and we just hadn't caught it yet.
So at the end of the day, our homeowners is covering the $10k plus worth of damage to the truck. But her treatment is on us. |

| I would rexray in 3-5 days and see how much blood is in the joints.
My guess is there will be blood and her joints should be flushed then re injected with HA.
The reason being if the blood stays in the joint it can calcify and wreck the joint |

I will definitely bring this up to the vet. |

| I'd look into a salt water spa or maybe an aquatread.
Magna Wave would probably help too.
MagnaCu blanket.

I think you should definitely leave her turned out so she can move around. The more mobile she is, the better.

| Right now she's on strict stall rest. We are not 100% we haven't missed a fracture in her left hind. |

Water treadmill might be better. Swimming is hard work. |

Location: Florida.. | My gelding was in our show barn and hated thunder.. groom put him in a stallion stall and it has one side cement wall.. he kicked it and fractured both hocks. it is a long process and we had to stall him so I think for muscles the turn out is best but since it could be fractured Id stall .. right now id be very vigilant and id cut grain..

| No grain, only grass hay. She's in good weight so she is good that way. What I'm actually concerned about now is she is rubbing through my dressings in like 5 hours and has burns on her hocks? Ugghhh this is so stressful!
Bibliafarm what was your regime for hock fractures? |

Want kind of truck was it, 2 wd, 4wd, lifted, ect. Where was the damage? Quarter panel, in the center? How fast were they driving in town? Any lacerations or apparent swelling anywhere? Was she knocked to the ground or did she remain standing? Did she hit them or was she standing in the road and they hit her?
These are all questions that can help you determine point of impact, which can help you determine where the injuries may be. As a medic, it was one of the things that I learned while working in the field.
A high truck will have a higher POI, or point of impact, which can be above the hock but targeted more in the stifle area. Is she gimpy at all today? I really feel like keeping her turned out would be better if there isn't a fracture.
Long story, short... My gelding "ran" into my car. Front driver side quarter panel, put his head through the windshield, bent the steering wheel and damaged the dashboard. It did over $5k worth of damage to the car. I'm guessing the impact was at about 30 mph. My husband was driving and I was in the passenger seat... It was a horrible feeling. He was tossed on top of the hood, his head came through the windshield, he slid down and fell to the ground, jumped up and ran off. Short of a small cut just above his eye, he was fine. Maybe a little sore. I didn't take him to vet, just glued the cut and turned him out in the little trap out front so I could keep an eye on him. He probably faired better then I did, lol.
These guys can certainly take a licking and keep on ticking! Sounds like your mare will be fine too.

Location: Northwest Florida | I'm glad that her injuries were not worse! I would have a follow up x-ray done, and good chiro and massage therapy work. The school I attended had a hit by car case and the regular massage therapy worked wonders. Good luck! |

| Sorry I didn't give to many details. It was a 3/4 ton dodge. Not lifted but big and she's not to huge. It hit her right in the haunches. We are not convinced it didn't hit her in the hock and turnout is not an option cause the vet isn't sure there might not be a fracture they didn't catch with imaging. Or tendon damage, etc. He was going about 30mph and just caught her hind end. Actually had some major family drama come up so sorry not more detailed. Still want to hear all available tips, sorry not able to get more info to you guys nkw. |

Agree, my vet prefers aqua tred vs swimming because a horse can hollow out their back while swimming causing major soreness. |

If the horse is still rubbing through dressings, I would wet the front of the dressing just enough for pepper to stick then sprinkle pepper on. The horse should leave it alone. |

| It looks now that the joint might be septic and what we thought was her rubbing was actually an abcessing blowing out of the joint. She was pretty sick when I did chores and doctored her tonight. Pretty big turn for the worse :( I got penicillin into her tonight and she's headed back to doctor first thing in the morning. |

| Unfortunately everything thawed and rained overnight and our barn is down at the bottom of a very steep hill that is the only access. I gave her penicillin last night and she was starting to drink a little and pick at food. This morning I gave her more Pen, and through the night she had drank her whole big tub of water and was eating a little more enthusiastically. Vet is coming today cause she can get down there with her truck. We are starting her on gentamycin today and tummy meds. But with the slight improvement with Penicillin tells me we are on the right track with diagnosis and its septic. she comes by, we are going to talk realistic options. I hate realistic options :( I'll keep everyone posted on what happens. And yes, this is very hard. This mare was a gift to my son when he was 9 and recovering from a TBI that he got in a horse related accident. She got him not scared to ride again. She's pretty important to us. |

Location: Sunny So Cal | omg I'm so sorry!! How terrible, glad there isn't any major injuries that you can tell. Whenever something goes on in my horse I start them on THE NutraWound right away. This will help with the healing process. My bf used to take it too when he worked out and he said that he didn't become nearly as sore the next day. He could lift weights mutliple days in a row without become too fatigued or sore. So I'm sure it will help with her soreness too. Poor girl praying for a speedy recovery |
