How long does it take to get the job done?  Not looking for other alternatives as we have already done it.  Just a time frame.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the alcohol used to just kill the nerves that communicate pain from the naturally fusing hocks?

Little of both, I think.

I was told 3-6 months if it is going to work.

There is also a strict exercise regime during this time, for the fusion to be optimal, I can't remember the regime.

I had it done to my gelding that was in bad shape. He was basically off for the next 8months but he was TERRIBLE. It was hard on him also. He was in enough pain he did not want to walk to his feed for a couple days. He has done great with it since. I have had to inject one time as one didn't completely fuse but that's been 5years now. I had no other choice for him. He was terrible.

Ours is not in pain, and he is getting exercised per vet instructions.  He was partially fused.  Vet used radiographs to guide him and only put chemical in the unfused places.

Ione article stated this.....This injection results in fusion of the joint within 4-12 months. The pain relief is near immediate and horses can return to work within 48 hours of the injection.

This thread has info down further on it..

We decided to do this with one of our geldings who had chronic hock pain and was partially fused, too.  He struggled with his hocks for about 5 years before we did the alcohol injections as a "last ditch."  He never got as sore from at as we expected, in fact, he seemed to show improvement within a week. We were riding him about a month later and within 3 months he was being hauled again. It's been nearly 2 years since we did the single treatment and I wish we would have done it sooner.  He no longer needs injections and he travels like he should!  From the research I've done, he is not the norm... sounds like the injections are generally pretty painful for the first few days-week.

He is moving so good it is scary...

I keep waiting on something to go wrong.  I too wish I would've done it sooner.  He was clocking sore, but it just got to be too much for him and he was dropping in his turns.

Had it done...waste of time and money as it didn't help whatsoever.  Fairly soon after I had it done, we started hearing reports of it's not the cure it was thought to be, tends to either do nothing or cause more problems...vets not recommending it etc.  The vet that did ours stopped doing it and stopped recommending it as an option. So, I've always regretted doing it. I'm actually very surprised to see so many positive comments on it.  I am, however, very glad that it did the trick for so many.  I sure wish it had helped my guy! Good luck.

Our gelding was better right away, too!  He was so sore on his hocks before the alcohol that he walked with a gait similar to a German Shepard.  It's been almost two years, and he's like a new horse.  I wish I would have done it sooner, too- I was scared by all the horror stories I'd heard.  I'm sure it doesn't work for all of them (the posts here say so), but for Monte, it was a the miracle we'd hoped for!

My vet did it to one of my geldings, took 3 months, would do it again if I ran into the same situation.

I had my mare done and a year later fusion had made little to no progress so we did it again. That was about 2 years ago and I haven't X-rayed again but pretty sure it's still not complete. He wanted to do it once a month at that point till it was fused but I couldn't afford it and had just found out I was pregnant. He said it was one of a very few horses that he had ever done twice and is a well known lamesness vet with years and years in practice. The only thing I found that really helped my mare was 24/7 turnout and chia seeds.

Oh wow, that's incredible. I never would have wanted to make my gelding work through it and the vet wanted voluntary movement only. Glad it's going ok.

Yes on the the gait (when he would walk) but I literally was out of options also! New horse for me too.

If I remember correctly, it was about $800.  The actual injections weren't that expensive but we did contrast and a ton of x-rays to make sure the lower (non motion) joints were not communicating with the upper hock joint.

We were told to ride him, hard...
That exercise would keep him from being as sore.  I would have not trusted any other vet in the world to do this and was still nervous.  I am grateful it seemed to give the horse such immediate pain relief.  He had been sore for so long.  Rest, injections and so on just weren't working.  Despite being sore, he was still trying for my kid.  I don't know that this is a magic fix, or the complete fix, but I have no regrets.  For those who asked about costs, I don't know.  I just know what the total bill was and we had a lot done that day.  We originally went to try Tildren, but vet said this was cheaper and more proven to work.

Which vet did you guys in TX use?
Approximate cost?

I will be doing this for one of my horses in January and trying to figure out which vet would be best.

Thanks

I'm glad this was brought back around. I have a mare that will be fused this way in her coffin joint in the spring. She's in a lot of pain now, but due to her being in foal, the vet wanted to wait. She will wear a cast of sorts for 8 months to hold that joint in one place.
