I've got a few horses that have started chewing wood. I can't seem to find a common possible deficiency that would be causing it since they're all on different feed & their hay, pasture, turnout hasn't changed. I put out loose trace mineral salt in one pasture and the Himalayan rock salt out in another pasture to see if it would make a difference - it hasn't. All are on rice bran. The two on probiotics are also on top notch hay (alfalfa, Bermuda) in addition to their mix grass hay. They all look really good and get 10 hours a day of turnout.

They may need hay when turned out too. It keeps it interesting for them to roam and eat on hay located in different places especially when out with other horses this is a good plan. Horses need a lot of movement to keep the GI track healthy.

Picked up 12/12 loose minerals to put out. All the horses are turned out in groups of 3-5 on 5-7 acre pastures. One pasture has a grass round bale 24/7. They other pasture I throw out enough hay that they always have a good bit left over.

Vitamin/mineral deficiency.teeth needing worked on.ulcers.and then boredom. Red cell, 12-12 . Float or equine dentist. Forco, alfalfa . Change of scenery. Any one of these or all will take care of the problem.
