Evidently they've addressed the FDA's findings and have been back up and running for a while now. The company will be under continued scrutiny for several years, so I feel pretty confident that their products will contain what the label says. :-)

Thank you, I was told they ignored the warnings.....  I looked further into it and found that link, just thought I would share.  If they are still operating I guess they are legit- but it's important to know that without an FDA clearance, a compound pharmacy has zero responsiblility for maintaining the quality of their products.  I read enough about this company to not want to order from them again-  to me they fall into the "too good to be true" category- but I could be wrong- who knows?

Used them for years and will continue to do so! Having awesome results with the pentosan and other products. Extremely fast shipping, great prices. My vet even orders from them for her own horses.

I didn't have good results with the my last order of omeprazole.  I always thought that 2.3 g of omeprazole in one product would be identical to 2.3 g of omeprazole in another.  I didn't consider that the concentration of omeprazole could be different- like different concentrations of anything else- duh.  Just my own ligtbulb moment I'm sharing I guess...  :)

Which Pentosan do you buy from them? And what are you using it for? I know you also use Curost products. Do you still inject too? Thinking of using Pentosan on my gelding. I don't think hock injections are effective anymore.

I use the pentosan Gold. Always have. And YES, I still use Curost and have excellent results. USUALLY my big gelding with all the hock and coffin joint issues needs to be injected 2x a year. However, since being on curost and keeping that inflammation out on a regular basis, I luckily have NOT had to inject him and we are on month 9 nearing month 10 since last set of injections. I think the combo of curost daily and Pentosan gold weekly is really keeping him good without injecting. But If he goes sore I have no problems injecting. But it seems he can go ATLEAST 10 months between them now.. I'm Ok with once a year.

Horse prerace is $7.40 for omeprazole, when you pay $30 for the same thing here.  I treated all of mine for 30 days, and the expense was 25% of the cost I would have paid.  I've had good luck with them, but will defintely watch for any other offenses!

I have had good luck with the Omeprazol from them. I have always assumed it was less effective than the brand name, but I could not afford the brand name. We use about a tube a run. Everytime she steps on the trailer she gets half a tube, and every day we are on the road. I could never do that at $30 plus a tube. But thats the only product I have ever purchased from them.

Is the Pentosan once a month, or do you do a loading dose first? Sorry I've never used it before.  I'm also using Curost products.  I've only had to do hock injections and last year it really didn't seem like they lasted very long.  I can usually go 1 year for hocks, but last year it seemed like I got 2 months from the injections.  I know his hocks are fusing. This year before I start competing on him, I'll have my vet do a lameness exam and see if something else comes up.

I use their Pentosan Gold and do the loading dose of 6cc once a week for 4 weeks then I do monthly or every other month depending on the horse. I did see a huge differnce in my old horse with really bad knees. I just started a 5 yr old hunter/jumper on it. He crackles and pops. No one seems concerned but I think it is a cheap precautionary for him.

I do a loading dose of 1 shot weekly for a month 2x a year. Then I use it 2x monthly in between. If making a lot of runs in a shorter period of time, I will use it weekly. For my 4 year old he gets 2 loading doses of adequan a year 6 months apart and pentosan monthly in between.

Oh and I found a stabilized rice bran product that is made for senior horses. It's fortified with glucosamine. It can't hurt but i really don't expect it to be effective when given orally.

I agree- the FDA approved stuff is so much more expensive.  I used to have good luck with the omeprazole with HorsePreRace- but this last time it was obvious the treatments did nothing, even after 7 days.  2 days on Gastrogard and I have a happy horse again.  The difference was too easy to see....

 Playing the Devil's advocate

if the generic omneprazole and gastroguard were given continuously with the gg the last two days, it is possible that there was in fact nothing wrong with the generic and the horse just took seven days to respond to the medication.

However, I agree HPR is shady. Selling things like pentosan and dex without requiring an Rx is a red flag. Legit compounders like Wedgewood still require a prescription from a DVM to order those products. HPR is operating from outside the US, and I think that's how they are skirting these requirements.

I have used their omneprazole with success, though I have been wary of ordering injectibles for fear of QC or sterility concerns on my end. (Think banamine IM goes wrong type infections). I spend the extra and buy the pentosan from my vet. It is not a huge price difference, and while things can happen at any compounder, I feel better using one that requires an Rx to order. That lends them a little more legitimacy IMHO.

I like your logic and I agree- I was told of another equine med website where you could order drugs without a script- I had to find out if it was true so I "ordered" a bottle of xylazine- I was expecting a reject on the order because I had no script, but so far it looks like it shipped- hope I don't end up in jail- lol.  HorsePreRace ships out from Canada- so I also think that is how they've been able to dodge US restrictions on drugs-

a note on my experience with last shipment of omeprazole from HPR- I gave 1 tube for 7 days with zero effect.  I ordered gastrogatd and got it a week later, after 2 tubes I noticed an immediate change in attitude for the better.

You do realize that Canada has a longer and more thorough process when it comes to approving drugs.

I don't think the drugs are made in Canada as my vet has to order the meds from the compounding pharmacy and I have to pick them up from him.

Our vet association has laws that state the vet has to look at your horse prior to prescribing any meds. There are some vets who take this to the extreme. It is coming down the pipe that all alternative therapies massage/Accupuncture/dentists/any others you want have to be attached to a vet in order to conduct business. So we will be paying for a vet call and the other service.

So I cannot see how this compounding place being in canada as it would have been shut down. The product also doesn't have the labelling required by the government

When you buy from HPR they are actually in PANAMA. My credit card bill says PANAMA. lol And its shipped via USPS priority mail from an address ( That doesn't exist) in FLORIDA. Its at my door in 48 hours out here in CA.. LOL My horse responds well. I'm ok with it.

Well that solves the mystery of why they haven't conplied with FDA this far- the FDA sent their warning to the fake address in Florida- sheesh- they sure sound like an ethical company now don't they?  I am happy their products work for you- they are lots cheaper than FDA approved drugs- ??

But it is a HUGH price . One dose $55 or $86 for 10 doses.

I have 4 horses that I have put on it. They recommend a does per week for 4 weeks as a loading dose. Do the math. $1100 or $168? I never paid much attention to the comments about Pentosan before, but had someone recommend it and HPR when we were out in Vegas. So I got on here and looked at actual users' comments because ordering from out of country scared me, but so many on here seemed to have great experiences so I decided to try it. I could not afford to put these 4 horses on the prescription variety.

As for the FDA, it doesn't always have consumers' interests first and foremost. It costs something like 10 million $$ just to get testing started on a product, then they do a short cut approach on something like NutraSweet just to get it to market WITHOUT all the objective testing they are supposed to be so strict about. It's al about the money. Kind of like the "Energy Star" rating for appliances. That label is bought NOT awarded for energy efficiency.

I do NOT trust Big Brother Sam I am. I know I may be taking a risk, but I am a big girl and can take responsibility for it.
