I'm looking to buy a half way decent cowgirl hat this year. Any recommendations from fellow Barrel racers? What are the best brands and places to buy? And most economical too! I'm probably not going to spend $200-$300 on a hat this year.

Considering my husband probably has more cowboy hats than a woman has shoes, I feel like we've been through the trial and errors. I believe you get what you pay for when it comes to hats. I'd be a name brand snop (especially when it comes to felts). The best hats has been American and Resistol. Bailey & Rodeo King are good too. The higher number x it is, is obviously higher quality. You can find good quality straws for cheaper than felts.

Where do you all buy your hats? It seems like with googling all I'm finding is concert or trendy hats. I want a real cowgirl hat for Barrel racing not a novelty hat! Thanks.

I have 4 Charlie One Horse hats I'd sell ya! My daughter kept losing them when she ran and I was sick of paying the hat fines. She bought an American straw hat and has never lost it. She said its more comfortable then the Charlie One Horse.

Not to steal the thread. If the OP isn't interested, I might be! What size? My daughter is a state/regional level rodeo queen and always looking. She wears a 7 1/4 tho - big head!
We like the American Hat Company A LOT. The gentleman that orders for us has them custom made in a long oval and tweaked just for her. LOVE them.

Charlie 1 seem to have a very short crown or something. I am not crazy with how they fit either.

I think they look great but not a competition hat if you don't want to pay fines.

Try googling cowboy hat or the specific brands mentioned.
I'd recommend buying in person at least for the first one though. Different brands fit differently. I can't wear Charlie 1's even as a fashion hat, the crown is just too short for my head they look perched up there and someone breathes too close and it falls off.
I'm really wanting to have an American shaped for me - I was planning to do it at jr high finals next year then I found out they aren't coming back to Des Moines. Urg....

Rods has the best selection of hats, especially if you have a small head like me! Greenly hat works makes their store brand ones for them! They are great hats! Here's a tip: join their email, they have sales quite often and you can get up to 20% sometimes!

You can't Google "cowgirl hat" or you'll get the ridiculous stuff that you're not looking for. You have to Google "cowboy hat" or MAYBE "western hat".

My favorite straw hat by far is my Bailey. I have a Stetson for a felt but it gives me a headache and I absolutely hated my Charlie 1 Horse felt. Very pretty but I hate that I spent $200 on a hat that is just sitting around now collecting dust.

I ended up going to TSC and buying a black felt Justin hat. It was only $50 and it fit my head good. Someday I'd like to get a real nice quality hat but this one looks pretty good and I was able to try it on in person. Thanks for all the advice!

The Charlie One's are so tempting because of their cool designs but I would go crazy losing it all the time! Good to know this about them because I considered buying one. What held me back was not bring able to try one on. I wish they had hat vendors at some of the super shows. That's be a great time to different brands on.

Thanks but if it falls off easily it'll bug me too! Do you want to upload a pic in case anyone else is interested?
