Location: North Dakota | My dad just bought this mare for my mom to trail ride on and I was wondering if anyone recognizes the brand. I think she came from Oklahoma.
Sorry it is hard to read, she is all hairy because winter in North Dakota is COLD!! :) To me, it looks like L J over an A then that open circle around it.
Thanks in advance!

Got me as well...
Our brand may not be known far and wide to everyone as soon as they see it, but we are small and may only sell 1 or 2 branded horses a year. Not every horse on the property gets to wear the brand because people do recognize it regionally. We want to make sure the horses we are branding are horses we want representing us.
We have however seen our brand in more than one winners picture down the line - pretty cool.
I'm not sure how else someone's brand is suppose to become known other than branding quality horses that they've turned out.
The OP didn't give any detail about the mare, she might be a bang up little horse that they want to know more about, not to assume shes junk? |

Some people may work their whole lives to make their brand a success---blood, sweat, and tears included. Proud of their horses and what they (human and equine both) have accomplished. How can that so casually be called "junk"? |

Location: Kansas and loving it | I think maybe junk brand meaning that they bought the brand for a year or two and then let it go. In Kansas, you have to re-register your brand every two years or it goes up for sale. |

Or meaning it isn't a registered brand. It may be what is referred to as a "fly by vendor brand" where you stop by during a barrel race at a freeze branding booth and pick something out and they will brand your horse for you. Illegal in my state. |

Can you tell these just by looking at them? I know nothing about brands. |

I have a brand and live in KS at this time it's every 4 years
I wish they would sell 10 years at a time
Wanted to add the reasoning behind me having a brand is that I mostly train the foundation in babies and start them on the pattern I have had some success with this but absolutely refuses to train professionally. I do not buy and sell horses constantly I am not a horse trader but I have had a handful make me very proud and have no way of leaving my mark on them that I gave them a solid start and that they were special to me I also had an insodent where I sold a horse for a fair price and a bigger name bought her sold her 3 weeks later for not joking 5 times what I did and lied saying she put all the training on said horse and had her much longer.

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | A good brand should never be that hard to read. Meaning the characters used should be crisp and clear. Otherwise what is the point. To me it could be a W over A with the C around it. But who knows. I see too many people trying to make a pretty picture into a brand. WY won't allow that. Most brand states do not. |

Our brands are crisp and clear in the summer but look similar right now when they look like wooly mammoths...ours is simpler to make out but still fuzzy. |

They Don't Know Me

Location: Bastrop, TX | Here in Texas you can basically Brand your horse with whatever you design, BUT you first are suppose to contact the County in which you live and make sure that someone else has not registered that brand, nor is it located on the animal in the same location as you plan to use. Yes it is then important to register your brand with the county. There are other agencies it should also be registered with.
We are having a rash of horses being stolen right now so everyone is wanting to brand their horses. There will be a freeze branding clinic soon in our area. It's not a fool proof safeguard but it can be a deterent to some thieves if they see a brand.
My point is, I don't think this reasoning makes it a "JUNK BRAND". Yes brands were not used originally as a safeguard against theft. (IF WE COULD STILL HANG PEOPLE) we wouldn't need to use Branding as an aid to help prevent theft or IDENTIFY your animal if stolen.
Sorry to the Original Poster, no information on your brand. |

Location: North Dakota | Well ok then... sorry I asked! I was just wondering if anyone recognized it because we would like to know more about her. The brand is pretty crisp and clear when she is shedded off.. she is just really hairy right now because it is so cold up here in ND.

You might try shaving the area, just a little bit and posting it on facebook if you are on there. There have been a few people that have been successful finding info. It's not a bad brand, but certain characters do not work well with a brand. Ours is very simple and we still have to really rock it around while applying it to get it to freeze evenly. |

| Maybe try finding out who your dad bought her from and try to trace your way back to the brander if that makes any sense!! |

Location: Lost in the swamps | Brands are not junk, neither are they for the "well known"
a brand is a useful tool for identification. Check your state brand inspection department. |
