I wanted to look into insuring a small (dozen or so) cows and wanted to know who you all could recommend. I called my insurance agent and got a quote but would like to compare with a couple other companies. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Depends on if this is a registered set of cattle or commercial cattle.
We don't insure unless shipping major dollar animals across the country, then it is at the buyers expense.
Commercial cattle - go through whomever holds your farm insurance. They can have specific rider attachments for mortality insurance that will replace lost livestock at current market prices.
Registered/ seed stock - we've used American Livestock. We have never had a claim and insurance is usually around $10/$1,000 valued price. Its a little complicated determining the value price on seed stock, but not horrid.

We have State Farm for blanket livestock coverage. We've had a few claims over the years for lightning; the deductible is pretty high on the plan we have.
I have 30 of my own cows that run with my husband's 330. A couple of years ago, three of mine must have all been drinking at the water tank at the same time lightning struck it. They all 3 got fried. They were really good, young, bred commercial angus cows and the market for this type of cattle was very high. The insurance company wouldn't call them bred cows until they were in their 3rd trimester- would only pay out on slaughter cow price and the deductible was $1500. It hardly paid. :( A good policy would probably be cost prohibitive.

I suggest liability only. I wouldn't have livestock period without that. IMHO insuring against natural disaster is a waste of money, unless you live in a scary place.
