I just received my insurance renewal form and was advised that this is the last year my horse will be eligible for discounted rates due to his age and that next year he will no longer be eligible for Major Medial, also due to his age. I've been told,, "his rate will suffer a substantial increase and will require a vet exam at renewal." The Insurance company is Praetorian.
I don't mind the vet exam and understand that the older he gets, the higher the likelihood of potential veterinary care and loss payout. Does anyone know or have experienced what the "substantial rate increase" might be? Also are there other carriers out there?

This is common. Once a horse reaches 15 or 16, the cost to insure him goes up drastically. I decreased the insured amount for a year or two and then finally dropped the insurance.

Shop around and see what you can find. Call various local insurance companies and see what they offer. I'm in Canada and our insurance doesn't go up drastically but after 17 you have to have an annual vet check to ensure they are still eligible. Once they hit 20 they can only be insured for Specific Perils but from 17-20 the rate may only go up .5 of a percent.

I have mine insured with LCI insurance and they have been great to work with. Mine are younger but they've never hesitated in paying a claim. You might talk to them.

LCI is my agent ...
I expected it to go up and an annual exam - just like people ... just wondering what "substantial increase" I could expect. I will check with other agents.
