We baled our hay dry and it was beautiful! We have had a ton of rain this fall/winter and the bales have started to powder on the ends and sides exposed to air. Kept in a dry barn. Was fine in the fall. Have been saving the really nice hay for when it turned cold but every bale powders when you toss it (I noticed even our bales from last year doing it). Everyone around us is having similar problems. What do I do?
Been pulling the ends off and watering it down. I worry about the dangers of it. Anyone else experience this?
Baling hay to dry can cause dust, this may be what happened to yours.
This dust isn't as bad as the mouldy dust
Hay savers, eco nets, nag bags will help prevent the dust from aerosolizing and horses inhailing. I think they are around 280 for a round bale, 100 for a square, 50 for a hay bag

It isn't the inside of the bale though it is the ends and outside. And the hay wasn't dusty up until the last month or two. We were thinking maybe it was weather related?

Thank you!
it probably is from humidity ...
Being old and gimpy I back hay trailers into my barn and do not unload but feed off the trailers. Also no loss of hay on the ground row ..
This year I have had a huge amount of rain this fall and the green outsides of beautiful hay look like wheat straw and are dusty too.
Like you I double check the insides to make sure there is no gray moldy look and feed it without any concerns ...
if you are from Blueridge Tx ... you had the same weather pattern ... I am located at Lake Texoma ... about 50 miles away .. my area received over 82 inches of rain for 2015 which is over twice our normal amount ... Ok/Tx got enough to refill all the empty lakes that had water usage restrictions in cities ...
