I have a young friend who I barrel race with who is about 20. She was riding her horse down the side of the road that they live on and a truck hit them. The horse died about 5 minutes after it was hit, in the girl's arms. The girl was taken to the hospital, treated and SHE WALKED OUT OF THE EMERGENCY ROOM. Yes, God is good. Her mother stayed where the horse was and got the horse home and buried behind their house. We are all so traumatized by this. Jesse is in nursing school and cannot miss at all. She is so sore that she cannot even drive. Seriously, I think if it had not been for the horse, Jesse would have been killed. I think the horse took the major hit and Jesse flew over the hood. I find it hard to understand why there were no skid marks at all. Please keep Jesse and her family in your prayers during this very trying time. The guy was driving someone else's truck. He did not even call the highway patrol out and Jesse's mother had to call them before the horse could be moved. The insurance company is already taking a defensive attitude with them which is adding to their stress.

Prayers. So sad.  Unfortunatelly, they will probably have to hire a accident attorney. Other wise, insurance companies just will not step to the plate and do right.

How horrible.  Were they on a curve or anything?  Just riding down the side of a road?  I live in the middle of nowhere. . . but there are 2 RV campgrounds in the general area.
I walk 20 to 30 miles a week and have for many years.  I always have my dog and I hand walk 1 of the horses a few times a week for her exercise (I don't ride a lot and I figure I'm going anyway. . . may as well take her).  I would say 80% of the vehicles that pass me, are very careful but that 20% do scare me.  My horse and dog are very aware, but sometimes they are going so fast that IF something weird happened, there is no way they could stop.  My husband has gotten progressively more worried over the years because it seems more and more dangerous.
On the other hand, I am very careful and try hard to stay out of their way and am considerate of drivers.

Prayers.   I will admit it can be kind of scary to ride next to a road let alone on it. People don't slow down, and they take corners too fast. It is sad about the horse, but glad your friend is okay. God is good.

I have almost been sideswiped by a landscaping truck with a trailer on. No other vehicles and he had plenty of room. He was close enough I could see between the deck and the fender on the trailer. My mare jumped sideways enough to not get hit but not go in the ditch either. I was lucky, I know the guys father in law (our neighbor) told him about it. He told his daughter. She gave her husband a royal &$$ chewing. Now anytime he or any of his employees see me riding the give us a wide berth.

Prayers for your friend I can't even imagine what it would be like to lose one of my horses like that. Hope she wins!

What a tragedy; I'm sure she's heartbroken over her beloved horse. Many prayers for her for the physical AND emotional trauma she's endured.

I went and took pictures and a video of the road where this happened. I will post some pictures when I have time. I volunteered so they would have a record for the attorney. They went to an attorney today. It was a straight road but kind of a narrow road in that area. She was hit at about 6:10 pm so I videoed at that time to show visibility. Yesterday I took pictures at that time to show visibility. We think the guy was texting or something. He certainly wasn't too concerned about her or the horse.

Also, this horse was her barrel horse that her parents bought from my trainer. The horse was my trainer's futurity horse several years ago. I really have no idea what they paid for the horse but are it was a considerable amount.

So sorry, people are so impatient today and have lost consideration for others.   I have been in the middle of the road trying to catch a loose dog and drivers have barely hit the brakes as the go by on my very narrow road. Many prayers for your friend. Did the drivers stop to help?

The impact took out his radiator so he had to stop. Will find out what the attorney said and post.

Wow, people amaze me (in a very bad way) more and more.... It is all about "me" nowadays.... Everybody is in a hurry to get somewhere. And of course multitask while doing it.... I see so many people on the road with their phone in hand.
I know the school zones are hands free, but it should be hands free at all times, at every road! Will it totally stop people from doing it? Nope, but it will deter a big part of the population once they will be hurt where it hurt most, their wallets!

So sorry to hear the horse didn't make it, glad to hear the girl didn't get hurt too bad. Although the mental scars will never go away.

Many prayers for your friend. She must have had a guardian angel with her. So very sorry for the loss of her horse.

I used to live on a very busy road that I would ride on, I swear some people would see just how CLOSE they could get - then you even have the idiots who would HONK. I got to where I had to haul to ride as it just got too dangerous.

Prayers for her injuries and loss.

The insurance company will force them to get an attorney if they want any kind of settlement. The insurance companies demand that we pay on time for the insurance our government requires everyone to have, but when it comes time for them to pay settlement they will put up every obstacle possible. Expect it.

We had a horse hit in front of our house (he got out) at 2:00am and ended killing the horse and totaling the vehicle. Driver was not hurt (drunk and bragged he was going 82mph in a 55 when he hit the horse). Our insurance company told us to file against HIS insurance for the value of the horse, (we had to pay for the damages to his car), since this is a no fault state. They were nice at first and suddenly that particular agent went on vacation and the new one was an a##. We had to get our lawyer to send a letter before they finally settled.

If the driver was at fault, they should certainly go after the value of the horse (but be prepared to PROVE value).

They have a good friend in you for handling some of this in a tough time.
