| Is one better than the other? Why did you choose to feed one over the other? I have seen some feed both, and I wonder about that also.. why feed 2 different fats? |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | The amino and fatty acid profile is different is why you would feed both. I feed rice bran because it's readily available and cheap where I live. Flax is next to impossible to get here, and when you do it's expensive. Rice bran has gamma oryzanol that has muscle building properties. Flax has a higher Omega 3 balance. |

| I feed DAC oil. 4.5 lbs of rice bran is equivalent to 2 cups of oil. I love how my horses look!
The ingredients are a blend of vegetable oils (soybean, corn, flax seed, wheat germ, rice), essential fatty acids, fish oil, flaxseed, and vitamin E. |

| I was feeding mine stabilized rice bran but my horses were getting to huge on it and my geldings were excreting the oil out their sheath and causing problems. So I switched to flax. I feed half cup for harder keeper and 1/4 cup for easy keeper. after 3 weeks absolutely zero sheath grease and they are still slick shiny and they LOVE it. |

Just curious....how much rice bran were you feeding. I've been feeding rice bran to my mare for years and it's never made her 'huge' or even close to being huge. I recently started feeding her flax seed, which is making her gain weight. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I've been feeding it just over a year and haven't had any problems. Mine get from 1 cup (horses in training) to 3 pounds (the geriatrics in winter) per day. They're basically on a forage diet with just enough extra to keep their weight where I want it. No grain. I did notice that my gelding bulked up with muscle quite a bit last year after the diet change. Mainly through the loin and rear end. |

My vet said that depending on what was in the rice bran it can cause an odor to come out the skin. It was causing the greasy sheath and then flys and other insects were getting in there. It was a viscious circle. I was having to use Dawn dish soap to clean them every other day or so. SInce switching to flax it hasnt come back. |

Winwillows did say Cali rice bran is different from mid-south rice bran. |

Location: Borger, Tx | Very interesting thread! I started 2 of mine (a 19yr old & a 7yr old) on Max E Glo (stablized rice bran pellets), back in October and have had wonderful results with it. I'll have to pay closer attention though to the gelding & his sheath! |

That could be! I never knew.. lol SO far the flax is working great. I went 2 weeks with whole flax and saw results but decided just for fun to start grinding it just before feeding and WOW. great response so I think I will just keep feeding it ground up. |

Location: TX | Flax seed also, increases red blood cells so in turn increases oxygen to the muscles to help prevent soreness. It also helps recovery time.
Since it's omega 3 and omega 6 you are helping all of the joints to.
I personally love both Flax and rice bran. I have feed together and separate. |

That's interesting. I've never had those issues and I've been feeding it to my horse for 12 years. |

Rice bran is a waste product from human food processing ...
I won't any feed that contains human food or ethanol waste products ..
Whole flax seed is my preference and not as a weight gainer but as a shiny coat and appearance supplement. ..
If you need weight ... increase the amount of whole oats and alfalfa you feed. All of these are natural feeds without the issues of processed add-ons that feed mills use to increase their profits.
GOOD LUCK ..

Location: True North Strong and Free | Stabalized chopped flax(so oils are still contained in it) is high in Omega 3 fats. Rice Bran is high in Omega 6 and has no Omega 3. Horses need a 4-1 ratio of Omega 3 to 6's. Omega 3 will work as an anti-inflamatory, boost immune system, lower blood pressure, help recovery from fatigue as well as give you a good topline and coat. You can mix the 2 but be sure to stay higher in the Omega 3's. |

Location: Midwest | I have fed Rice Bran as a supplement to my hard keeper, usually only during our cold winters. Usually only 1 or 1/2 lb a day top dressed over grain.
I have fed flax in the past, but never really noticed a difference. Flax was also more expensive, so I just use the rice bran now.
If my horse needs some shine, I like the Healthy Coat product.
I have never had issues with grease or odor from the rice bran, and I have fed it for years. Must be that Cali rice bran lol |

| Kind of off topic but along the same lines I suppose....
If one is looking at adding rice bran and flax to their program, could they just add Renew Gold or would there be a benefit to adding each separately or in addition to RG? |

Location: IA | I feed Stride Shine for extra fat in my horses diet. It is an oil to top dress on the feed & very economical. Its all natural formula infused with essential fatty acids creating a brilliant shine while providing additional calories for weight gain. My horses love it & are very glossy in the summer. |
