| I have decided I'm going to start wearing a helmet when I ride. And when I barrel race.
I know there are other threads on here about the best helmets, but the threads are older and I know there are a lot more helmet brands/types out there now.
I'm small - about 5'1" and weigh about 110#. I don't want something that tips me over. LOL
What are the best helmets and why? I know nothing about helmets.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Location: In the Hills of Texas | You really need to go and try different brands on and find one that fits you. I love the looks of the Troxels but they don't find my head right and the Tipperrary fits perfect and I forget I have it on. |

| I raced with a Troxel Intrepid, and man is that thing was sturdy, but its lightweight, not hot, and stays out of your eyes. Lets just say, on the fall that broke it into 6 pieces, I walked away with only a minor headache, so it's a nice one. |

Location: Oklahoma | I have a tiny head and the dial fit Troxels fit me fine in S, Tipperary is wrong shape for me but I think they have a great design.. You need to go try some on, but don't think you have to pay $$ a lot to get safety, the under $100 helmets are made for everyday riding, schooling and training and lots are fancied up for barrel racers and kids now in standard brands. So much better than just navy or black or white!
I forget I have my helmet on too. So much better than the helmets from 30 yrs ago!

Location: Stephenville, Texas | Gotta try them on. A lot of people seem to love the Troxel but it hurt my head. I love the Ovation. Lightweight and I don't even notice it's there when I run. Way more comfortable than a hat and I don't have to worry about it tipping or getting in my way. |

| I also use an Ovation. It has more of a round shape. Really light and comfortable. I have a big head, and though I liked the style of the Troxel, it smashed into my temples on each side and hurt quite badly. I wear my helmet everyday to ride, and to barrel race. Honestly, it makes me more confident when my colt is acting up, and the first time a little girl in a helmet grins at you because you're wearing a helmet too, it makes it all worth it. |

Like everyone said, you have to try them on because we all have different head sizes. I love my Tipparary. I never used to wear a helmet. When I had my daughter, I started her out with a helmet and that's all she knew so she never complained and never even asked why I wasn't wearing one. I was embarrassed that I didn't wear one because by that time we knew better so I made excuses. I told people I didn't wear it because it was hot or heavy. I even said I couldn't hear well in a helmet! Then one day I felt like a hypocrite in front of my daughter so I started wearing one. Bought a few before I hit on the right one. One day we got done riding and I put my horse away and started down the driveway to go across the street to the mailbox and my daughter called, "You know you still have your helmet on!" It's so comfortable, I never even think about it; always forget I have it on.
Two years ago it probably saved my life. I fell off my horse and broke my back severely in two places. My head bounced twice. Bounced. I didn't even have a headache. I'm sure I'd be dead if I didn't have that helmet on! |

Location: CA | Ovation! I've used Troxel for years and they're also great but hurt my head a little (I have a rounder head). The Ovation for me is so much more comfortable and I have better visibility.

| Where can you go to try some on? I am guessing that here in Wichita, Ks there are no places that sell them. I have a TEENY head - 6 5/8 hat size, so I am thinking I will need a child's helmet. |

Location: Oklahoma | Having worked in an english dominated tack store and selling all brands of helmets, I highly recommend the Ovation. It's light weight, has a washable liner in it, and has the click adjusting system for a much better fit. There are videos online I can send you showing helmet fit if you pm me. |

| My family really likes the troxels. That being said if you can go to a store where you can try on a couple brands and such that might be best....then if you want to order via internet you'll know what you like |

| I to agree that you just have to go and try different brands until you find what works for you. Also, if you are not set on a western style, you might consider some of the English style brands or even a jockey's helmet. I personally wear a jockey style, because I found that it slipped around less on my funky shaped head, and didn't make me feel like a bobble head! |

Location: Got Lobsta? | I've had great luck in Troxels and I have a tiny head. However I pre-purchased the new Resistol hat/helmets. It hasn't come in yet, but wondering if I'll look like a martian when I put it on. Kinda hoping it looks good with my tiny head! |

Jake Barnes, 7 time world champion team roper, is now wearing the Resistol/hat helmet after his accident that caused him to miss the past NFR. |

Location: North Dakota | I have a small head, that is more oval in shape. I love my Tippery Sportage. I wear a size small. Normal hat size I am a 6 7/8 (I think .... I hardly wear my hats because I usually have my helmet on!) The Tippery Sportages measure pretty true to size as I just ordered a second one last year and couldn't remember what size my first one was (and there was no tag). It is extremely light weight and also is low profile, so I don't feel like I have a mushroom head.
Heck, I bought a snowboarding helmet last year and it was a YOUTH large. Haha. And a pink one, no less.
I agree that you should try on helmets to see what is comfortable. I feel like round heads usually do better with Troxel, which is why I don't think they are comfortable for me. |

Troxel should have the Fallon Taylor helmets in their store.
They are available for pre-order right now. Coming Soon. They are actually just the same helmet they always had, just different colors is what I heard. |

Location: NE Texas | I have a matte grey Ovation schooler that has been on my head twice if someone would be interested in it. I think it's a size small (I wear a 7 hat, and it fits but is borderline tight). It's has the dial so it's adjustable. I just don't like it as well as I like my Charles Owen, despite the fact that it's much lighter weight. |

| Fallon Taylor's helmets are out now. They are made by Troxel and of course come in a lot of bright designs.
