OK had a gelding kick out and get a cut on the outside of a rear leg. Bled like crazy went to the vet and he has also fractured the upper end of his splint bone into several pieces. Do surgery the next day to pick out the bone fragments and sew up the wound. Did x-rays to be sure we got all the pieces. My question was should the rest of the splint bone be removed? Vet said it should fuse together and be OK. We are at about 6 weeks and he is still a bit swollen and still showing some pain. Anyone dealt with this before and what are your opinions? Thanks maybe I'm an overly protective Momma! LOL

I was always told if it is upper, it needs to be pinned as they need the upper part of the splint bone as a tendon attaches to it. If it is a lower break it can be removed.
My splint bones, we have injected stem cells into some, and bone marrow into others. I am impatient so the faster healing the better. Vet just did one a few months ago pinned the splint, 2 weeks later there was no evidence of healing so then we went ahead with stem cells, she now has been cleared to ride for two weeks.
