I'm looking at a trailer that has a 6'2 height. I have 2 coming 3 year olds, that are 15.1 and 15.2. respectively. The two colts appear to have a significant amount of growth left to do. I am concerned that they will bump their heads coming out and feel claustrophobic. Opinions anyone?

The majority of trailers are 7' tall. Now, the inside height may vary due to roof bows, angle of the curve of the roof, etc.

Oops let me clarify, the trailer has a 6'2 height opening. It has 2 more inches of clearance inside the trailer.

If the trailer only has a 6'2" clear height at the rear frame, chances are that trailer is only 6'6" tall. I know our trailers that are 7' tall have a 78 1/2" clear height at the rear frame

I had a stock trailer that was 6'6' and my horse hit his head more than once. I bought him a bumper finally until i got a different trailer.

I don't have a trailer so have had to borrow a couple stock trailers. I don't know the exact height but I'd say they're about 6'6 cause I'm just under 6' and don't feel like I'm going to hit my head. My horse is fairly large, 15.3 maybe 16 hands. He's a real trooper and always loads and hauls quietly in those trailers but it definitely is NOT idea. If you can find a 7 footer then do that! That is definitely what I'll be getting.

I'd go with a minimum of 7' and even with that height I had a 16.1 that would throw his head and needed a bumper.  Unless the trailer is too good to pass up I'd keep looking if it was me :-

We used a shorter one for a few years, and during this time, I was hauling three 16+ hand horses. They all learned real quick to not throw their heads up when backing out, or the ceiling hurt (they could keep their heads at a decent position, it wasn't cramped for them or anything hard, they all just were going through bad backing stages from the trailer). Poor Tucker (16.2hh TB) probably hit his head 20x before he learned to back with his head down (he was real sour in the trailer, so it was probably good for him), the other two it only took one bump on the top before they were like, oh, that's a bit low, better keep our heads down....not him though. It knocked some sense into him in the end though, so I guess it worked out.

Years ago, we hauled our horses in the family stock trailer. It was dark and small. My horse was 16.1 hands. We didn't usually haul them with saddles on, but the few times we did, my saddle horn literally had only a couple inches (at most) clearance to the ceiling. As a safety precaution, I always hauled him with a bumper pad on his head.

One time when we went to the vet and he saw we had a bumper pad on his head, he praised us. He wished more people would use them because he sees SO many head wounds from getting bumped in the trailer.

My trailer I have now is a good height for both my guys so I don't haul with one. If I ever would have a low ceiling trailer, I would absolutely haul with a head bumper. It sure isn't going to hurt!

Our trailers are 7' 6'' slant type. We found that we could haul some of the horses up to 17/ 18 hands in a box stall. Our other good move was the ramp for loading.

I've heard the horror stories about getting rearended and not being able to get the ramp down to get the horses out. Makes me stay away from the ramp trailers.

Hmm, if you get rear ended that hard, even if you didn't have a ramp, wouldn't it still bend doors so badly you couldn't open them either?

Just a thought.

My trailer has an escape door, by logically it still doesn't make much sense. You'd have to remove each divider in order to actually get the horses out the escape door in the front stall, which I suppose you could do if you absolutely had to and couldn't get the back door open.
