Entered my mare for her maiden and is was awful. She has been working great in the practice pen away from home but on the back side of first and second she doesn't want to head up the arena:( her and I both looked like giant fools. :( I need some encouragement I have been working my tail off getting her ready to enter but obviously she isnt. Her foundation is fantastic trula Churchill commented she was too broke. She is also patterned to death....ugh

It is a whole new world when you actually start taking them places.

They can really humble you.

Stick with it, do lots of exhibitions or timed onlies, try and get into the arena ahead of time.

I try and haul my horses for 6-12 months before I start competing on them, and sometimes it still falls apart.

My Rambo horse, the first time I exhibitioned him, turned the first and tried to run out the gate. I put my left spur in his belly, he went to bucking, but I didn't let off until he was back on the correct line.   He ran home outside the 2nd twice, ran all over the pen a couple times, ducked the 2nd once, came out of the first AND second on the wrong side...in a rodeo perf.  Don't despair, just keep at it--correct her mistakes, and praise her for what she did right.  He ended up being the winningest, most honest horse I've ever ridden, so a rough start means nothing.   I think the ones I managed to keep perfect through training lacked the aggressiveness and confidence of the ones I let screw up and then corrected.

My daughter took her mare into her first run and she got half way to the first barrel and just froze. She couldn't make her move and had to get off and lead her thru the rest of the pattern. LOL at least the announcer said the pretty girl on the gorgeous mare sure look good " standing " in the arena. I thought it was hilarious.

It doesn't matter how prepared you THINK you are, once you enter, your nerves start to get to you and things can quickly fall apart. Just keep going, it WILL get better. As long as you learn something, it's not a waste :)

I think this happens to most everyone, just part of the process.   I have watched horses who smoke runs in their home pens freeze up when hauled to new pens.   It is all part of the seasoning process.   I bet you are doing much better than you think you are.

Hang in there.  Young horses are definitely challenging and will make you second guess every move you make, but the journey is so worth it.  Just take your time and keep going.  Exhibition until they are comfortable and have shown they will work in new arenas.  I prefer not to trot my first exhibition, but go ahead and cruise through, the slow it down in the preceeding exhibitions.  I want my first time in the arena to be the one that counts, as most shows I go to there won't be any exhibitions available and I don't want myself or my colt to be reliant on getting in the pen before we run.
