I've recently been researching the holistic side of things. I was wondering if anyone feeds herbs or all natural and if so what. I've been leaning towards turmeric, slippery elm, white willow bark, and chamomile flowers.

I am a huge believer in herbs! I love using them for all my horses. I have a mares that used to crib, I started feeding her peppermint, lavender, marshmallow and aloe leaves. I haven't seen her crib in months :) I love the white willow bark and turmeric instead of Bute. Also, valerian root is a great way to ace a horse, it has mild sedation chemicals. The herbs work wonders and are usually so much cheaper than medications. Just be leery though if you are competing where they dug test your horse, as a lot of these herbs will cause a horse to test positive (such as racetrack). But they can help with so many different problems!

So cool to hear positive feed back! I haven't tried anything yet just wanted to put some feelers out. I was looking into something for joints, digestion, and anxiety.

I recently started silver lining herbs for my slightly heevie (sp?) gelding, after a week he's finally eating them.  I would be interested in knowing a reputable place to know what to give and how much to give as we have a really nice health food store just a block from where I work.

I feed Cur-OST as well. I was always unsure of herbs through out the years, whether they actually worked or not. Well I can now tell you the right blend of herbs does more than any medication or synthetically made supplements ever did for my horses. It is amazing what it can do!

I got some info on how much to give from a holistic horse woman's website. She does a blog and videos. I'll try to find the link.

I had the same experience as Midwest did. I love Cur Ost. It has made a night to day difference in my horse. I like that I don't have to worry about how much of what to mix with what. Most of all I love that I got my horse back to his old self and we can enjoy each other again.

I truly believe that Equine Natural Herbs Kidney Plus saved my mares life...here is out story so far:
http://forums.barrelhorseworld.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

I've also added Cur-ost to my horses routine though I've been warned about feeding two herb companies products and I appreciate the warning and the info. After speaking to CC's 2 vets and Dr. Schell with Nouvelle Cur-ost we all agreed that her ultrasounds on her kidney's and bladder will dictate the use of the kidney herbs.

I am so happy you and CC seem to be doing really well. I can hardly wait to see how she does this year. Still praying for her continued healing. I am always glad to read your updates. This has been a really good educational thread.

Thank you again for all you did for my girl too GLP. I've never had children but let me tell you, it has taken a "village" to help me thru some of CC's "adventures", LOL!!!
As far as the Cur-ost products go, I have all of mine on the Total Support. Had started the gelding and on the Green originally and CC on the Stomach one. They both were improving on those formulas but after talking to Dr. Schell some more at length about their history I switched to the Total Support. CC fractured her patella in 2011 and I had refrained from 2 day races with her since then since she can no longer have Bute or Previcoxx because of her kidneys. The gelding had come up on and off sore in the right front over the last year, he was on again sore at the time. We found that the gelding had an enormous abscess in the right front, got that taken care of though it had to be drilled out, dang near down to "bedrock", the hole in his sole was about as big around and deeper than a gallon size milk jug lid. Again switched them to the Total Support, CC ran sound and well at her first 2 day race in 4 years, ate at the trailer and drank water which is normally a problem with her. Tucker's sole filled in completely in about 10 weeks. I used the remaining Green and Stomach on my big mare that is a headshaker. Since starting her on those I no longer have to give her the RX meds for headshakers and to make my life easier switched her over to the Total support also. Money is tight but I will do my best to never be without this product for them.

I recently did a trial of Cur-Ost. My horse has KS so has chronic inflammation in his back, which he does get injections for. They keep it under control for about 5 months but still he will have issues if I don't work him for a couple days. So anywho his injections wore off and I took that as an opportunity to try the Cur-Ost. He was on the loading dose and I didn't do anything with him for like 4 or 5 days because I was taking care of my mom after her surgery. Normally, after that many days off he'd be bad even with the injections. His back was PERFECT. I could not believe it. I ran out of the bag and haven't had a chance to order more, which sucks, but I was BLOWN AWAY with how good he felt and how well he ate it! Once I can afford to stock up on a couple bags I plan to keep him on it indefinitely. It worked for him and it worked for me!

I recently (3 weeks ago) started a mare on Equine Natural Care herbs. Long story short, she poisoned herself nibbling on plants that were toxic to her, and her liver & digestion needed support. She's also on their blood dtx mixture. I've heard nothing but good things about feeding herbs and I'm hoping these will help her out! I love seeing that herbs have helped others out so much already!!

Its good stuff and I loved that when I asked for a list of ingredients and why they were in there I got one from my distributor of ENC, it was the reason I went with them over other companies.

I think you've got to be very careful feeding herbs, especially when you're mixing. I do mix my own for ulcers after doing a ton of research & actually having tried the same herb mix from an accredited herbalist and having great results..

Herbs for Horses from Guelph , Ontario, Canada. The first company on the market in North America at that time for equine .They have been in business since the 90s. Their products are tested with research trials on racehorses at the University of Guelph Equine Research Centre. Their main customers are racehorses trainers and hunter-jumpers.They sponsor a lot of Olympic, Grand Prix and Top Race Trainers in Canada.
I liked the products as they came in leafy mixes rather than fine powders..never had a problem with fussy horses. They will custom mix formulas ( inc vit/mineral supplements etc) for individual horses so you can have just one pail to deal with..( hopefully they too might start the daily packet thing) They manufacture on site raw product to finished to ensure quality control. They travel directly around the world to purchase the herbs from growers.
I used Breathe, EIPH mix, Mare product , Kelp, may order again for one horse as with the low Canadian dollar it will be a good deal and their products are reasonable already.
I will not use herbs from a bulk store.. And mix myself. Too hard to know what you are getting from an importer and where the source is( think China ugg)
