Thick shouldered/Back horses!! My 5 year old has really really filled out in the last year. I really think I need a wide tree and gullet. I can't afford a new one so I am looking for used. Not sure what brands typically fit wide backed thick horses. Thanks a bunch!

My horses with the wide backs, crown c/Martin has been the only saddle to fit.

My wide horses I ride in a 10 and an 11 gullet. My narrow horse rides in an 8.5
Sadly I tried all the brands before fitting with martin

I have a really big gelding, not quite 16 hands, but he is just big. Also have a mare that is just a chunk. I recently purchased a Double J Pozzi Pro wide and this fits them both great. The mare has a bit of a flatter back, but still has some wither. I love it. No more rolling issues on her and works great on my gelding. Its wide enough without being too wide.

Edited to add: I have a CJ record breaker with a 7" gullet and its way too tight on my gelding and just didn't fit the mare right. Those saddles have a weird tree. Its really flat. Only thing it fit way my huge 16.1 gelding that I lost last year.

I didn't have good luck at all with a Martin saddle on a big shouldered horse.  Mine is in a Merrill.  The Shiloh Contender seems to fit him well too.

My Martin FX3 with a wide gullet and flat bars fits my wide backed horse. A regular tree rocked too much down in front and a more average size gullet was too tight behind his shoulders.

Thanks everyone! What a task. Lol I will start my search and see where it takes me. All the saddles i have tried so far slip to the left and by the time you run you have to get off and adjust it before you go in the arena. Pain in the butt. I'm playing with saddle pads until I get a correct saddle.

If the saddle slips to the left, your horse may need to be adjusted. My mare did this when she picked up her left lead, it wasn't chiro she needed, but she needed the tendons and ligaments released.

If you are going the Martin route, you can message me and I can try and steer you in the right size direction

Try a Purdy.... Tree is designed differently and the fit is amazing. Don't do the big gullet thing. I talked to 2 girls this month that got out of their custom fitted martins with oversized gullets to go to a Purdy.

I really like  my double j Lynn McKenzie wide tree but for a really big horse I would try a Lynn McKenzie nueva.  Also Panther Canyon  will make a Sibley saddle based on a form that you make from your own horses back. It is a really reasonably priced custom fit if you are willing to go with a flex tree.

Have a horse just like that and I have her in the widest CJ (looks like a record breaker but I'm not sure thats what it is?) and I know it was made by Scott Thomas cause it's under the CJ concho. It's the widest one they make and it would literally fit an elephant it's so big but it works! Plus you can always shim! I'll try to find the gullet size or serial number. She also fits in the Allen Ranch we have that is from the 80's but it's a 12" and I look like a clown trying to fit in it lol. It has really flat bars so it fits every wide horse.

I loved my Shiloh/Jordan Peterson fit wise and I found the JJ Pro to fit my horse better than the Pozzi; keep that in mind if your not super happy with the fit of the Pozzi :)

I've got two thick beefy QH's and I am loving the Lisa Lockhart Circle Y Flex2 in the WIDE on them.

Although I am concerned that my coming 5-year-old is going to outgrow it..... Time will tell!

I have the Meleta Brown #2 tree which is pretty wide and flares for BIG shoulders. The only other saddle I've found to work is Martin. My meleta is actually for sale since it doesn't fit me, but it really is probably the most versatile, well designed saddles I've met.

You can't find used ones - I looked for a long time and stumbled across one almost by accident.  He does occasionaly have demo saddles so I'd contact Vernon on the FB page.  I've riden lots of different brands, some I liked better than others but this is the top of my list.

They sound pretty sweet. I'm not really in the saddle market right now, but if I get a prospect like I'm hoping to do soon I will need another saddle. How does it feel for the rider?
