Had a friend pick me up a bag of rolled barley. It's packaged by nutrena. I looked at the tag and it was made August 2015. So 6 months. This particular feed store does keep it dry and inside their store, not an old shed in the back. Is it safe to feed? I did an online search and I have found opinions on storage from 3 months to 3 years! Lolll thanks.

Awesome. 6 months is well within that range!! I'm only feeding very very little anyway.

Barley is like wheat it ends up pasty like a glob of flour in the gut and if it clumps in a wrinkle can
give you ulcers or horse a tummy ache .... remember horses can't burp ...

Any time the shell is cracked on a grain oxygen in the air depletes its food value and of course over
time can become rancid or of no value.

Grain storage facilities rotate their feeds so they do not age ... usually the stored stuff is last years
crop and it is continuously air dried and debugged.

I would dump it in a creek and let the fish eat it...

I am one step ahead. Lol I don't have a creek so it went in the middle of a field for squirrels and deer. Lol I opened the bag and it just didn't smell fresh. Not worth the risk. I plan to get a fresh bag and mix it with whole oats. But only like half pound each a day. Lol
