Location: TN | I'm interested to learn more about Vernon Purdy Saddles. I spoke with him yesterday but would love to get some BBs opinions on them! What can you tell me?
And if you have ridden a wide gullet Martin, how do they compare?
He said he makes two styles of cantles for barrel saddles. One for more forward riders and one for riders who like to stay seated during a run. I don't know which one would fit me best. I really like the FX3 I have now but it's a 10.5" gullet and won't fit a colt so I'm looking into these to see if they would work for any horse I ride. Any opinions or thoughts are welcome! :) |

I got to try one for kicks at a demo he did in Stephenville about 2 years ago.....I loved it, but couldn't really justify buying one at that time. I already had a saddle on order.
I've got a very tricky to fit 6yo mare - she has a very flat topped back and big shoulders. We've been thru quite a few saddles. Something would fit her for a while, and then she'd outgrow it and they would bridge. Lucked into finding a used Purdy about 6 weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I've riden it on 5 horses and they've all moved out really well in it. I don't know which style it is that I have but it's a nice balanced seat and easy to make a run. I owned a few Martins - there's no comparison to a Purdy. I've talked to 2 girls this month that got out of their custom fitted wide gullet martins and bought Purdys instead, they're much happier now.

Location: Oklahoma | I rode in one that belongs to a board member about a month ago, but I couldn't really tell much about it because the stirrups needed to be let out and I didn't want to mess with someone's stirrups before they made a run. It fit my mare, so I went to a demo he did a week later in Oklahoma. The saddle that he had at the demo fit all four horses I watched it go on. If I would have had the money at the time then I would bought one, but I didn't. I just sent my down payment for his next 14.5" tree yesterday and I cannot wait!!
The only Martin I have rode in was an 8.5" gullet Crown C (different horse, but I think the Purdy will fit that horse as well). I liked the Purdy immensely better, but I hated the forward feeling of the Crown C. I haven't sat in a FX3, but I was a 15" in the Crown C and I'm a 14.5" in the Purdy... if that helps at all!? |

I don't know, but this video is at the top of the facebook page. What a crock of you know what, is all I am thinking. Looked like quite the rigged video and that trainer couldn't teach a spin to a propeller anyway.

Yes that's what he told me also. Pretty pricey, but if they really work like he claims they would be worth it. |

That's exciting!! I agree with Herbie that you'll have to share pics when you get it. I'm going to Abilene in May so I'm hoping to stop by on the way to at least sit in one of them to check seat size. Too bad there aren't any demos around here. |

| I heard a lot of great things about these saddles. My understanding is it is not so much about the gullet but the bars, they are wider and give you a closer feel to the horse. Someone told me he sends them to a shop to be made where a wide variety of different saddle makers send theirs and he has had a few problems in the past with the shops. I had been in contact with him, getting a saddle priced, I left him a message that I had heard about problems with the shop, had heard they had been resolved but wanted to confirm. I never heard back from him so I moved on. I really wanted to try one. |

Location: In a happy place | I bought one and just loved it. It fit my colt fantastically. And I liked the way it sat much better than my Caldwell. I sold it when I knew I would have to have surgery again to try to make my arms work correctly and the lady that bought it loves it too. Many years ago Monte Foreman had some saddles made that would help get the weight off a horses rear end so they could stop. I had one of those and these Purdy saddles kind of remind me of the Foreman saddles just much better. |

Location: Oklahoma | I am the one that bought Sorrel's saddle! and yes I love it and by the grace of God I got a great one that fit my horse and me perfect! Fair warning bout his saddles tho not one fits the same even if the same tree. My 2 friends also bought one and of course we tried on our horses and they all 3 fit so different. I am very secure in my saddle and I will not be selling my saddle! This is my forever saddle! I have not felt like that in long time! I just hope it fits the new horse that is coming in. Try before you buy if you can. |

Defense Attorney for The Horse
Location: Claremore, OK | I hosted one of Vernon's saddle fitting clinics here last year. The tree is designed to displace weight more evenly over the back and allow for free shoulder movement. I observed the same tree being fitted to several different horses by just changing the thickness of the saddle pad (Navajo with a felt bkanket, one or both).
The tree fit many different back widths and shapes by just adjusting thru saddle pads. It was very impressive. |

Location: Texas! | I just found a used one and it fits my gelding amazingly he is a year post op from kissing spine surgery and he moves out much freer than in the lazy L I had before. I love the way this saddle rides. Even sweat pattern everytime and haven't had any complaints. |
