I've found a like new Coats on a tack site with the perfect measurements for me and my mare. I've never owned one but I hear they're good saddles. Can someone tell me if the pommel is lower or even with the cantle? I'm not really a fan of saddles with a low pommel.

A Coats will have a flat type of seat, rather low in the cantle and pommel when compared to say a pro rider, Caldwell, josey, etc. That being said a Coats is an extremely well made saddle, they ride very balanced, and hold their value. I would probably give it a shot if the measurements are correct.

I have had 3 and LOVE them!! I have had a wide tree, and two standards. They fit horses great, and honestly the low pommel and cantle doesn't really bother me because the saddles sit you correct and balanced. If the price is right I would do it

I actually just bought a new pro rider. I like the seat and I find myself sitting back more, but the pommel is lower than I like. I'm comparing the pictures of it to the Coats and the Coats looks more even. I'm trying to add pics of them both. (The one on the horse is the pro rider)

I have a Lazy L Coats and love it. It is a really well made saddle and fits my two hard to fit horses.

Coats are custom saddles and can be made to any specification the buyer requests, so not all of them will have the same dimensions, seat, etc. Even with other non custom makers, the dimensions may not all be the same and a saddle maker can alter top quality saddles to a degree as well. (example can add more rise to the front of the seat to give a deeper pocket).

My boyfriend only owns Coats saddles and I am absolutely in love with them. Granted they are all rope saddles but I prefer rope saddles over barrel saddles when doing just about anything anyways. If I can ever afford to buy another barrel saddle it will be a Coats hands down. They fit all our different sized horses amazingly and are super comortable and good looking too. I feel like they hold me in the saddle without making me feel tight or claustrophobic. I can say nothing but great things about the saddles and the company.

Ashton,
Is that picture of the pro rider sitting on your horse? The horse appears to be a touch down hill. The line from concho to concho shows that the saddle is running downhill. That could be part of why you feel the front end is low. If you are wanting a higher front end on a saddle look at a Caldwell or a Talmadge Green by Tex Tan. I have a TG and it has a nice high pommel to "catch" you and a good rise to the seat as well. That being said a very good friend of mine rides a little mare, who is way more down hill than your horse, in an original Coats and it works very well for them!

While the topic has been brought up....do coats saddles fit narrow racey type horses? I am not sure I would like the lower pommel/cantle either I'm a pozzi fan.

WOULD NOT RIDE ANYTHING ELSE!!!!!  LOVE THEM!    And if you don't like it, you will not have trouble reselling it!  But if you sit in one, you will love it!  the only way you won't like it is if you get one that is too big or too small....ha!
