Location: Ky | I have a 5 yr old that I am finishing up and ready to run. I have changed up her bits throughout her training period and now looking to get her into a good running bit. Right now i am working her in a Martha Josey short shank gag with a dog bone twist. I am looking for something that has quick release, good stop and not scary for her. Any suggestions?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU9KKIqt4sk? Boyfriend missed first barrel, but here is some video of her. Starting to pick up speed.

Location: Somewhere around here | The only thing I would suggest if she's working well with that as her training bit I'd buy one exactly like it but with longer shanks if she's getting strong with you. If not then maybe just keep that bit that your using in her for runs and switch to a softer bit when trail riding and plain arena work (no barrels). |

Location: Oklahoma | For my horses I like to try to stay out of gags if I can. And keep in mind you may initially get the response you want with a more severe bit, but horses tend to harden up if you keep going more severe. I like dutton bits personally, and Mylers. I prefer 3 piece. I like to ride in snaffles at home (o ring d ring) then if I need a shank at shows if they are stronger/more wound up I go to those. Best of luck to you! |

Location: Ky | This is what I am using now. 3 piece, gag helps with bend, but slower release. Now she is ready to run, I would like to get her into something with a quicker release, but nice for a young one starting out.

| Training is where you find a bit the horse works to and can withstand the riders sloppy hands, miscues, and hanging onto their head for rider balance.
Looking for a more severe running bit to use at an event vs the one used at home is the riders lack of confidence in their basic training program when asked for speed.
Be focused all <18 seconds, know where to setup this particular horse on each barrel. two handed between barrels, ride deep and ride quiet and work your inside rein and leave the outside rein slack ... make your run home smoken ..
now go to the pay window ...
Whoops .. forgot your video critiques ..... STAR and STAR 2 ..
In neither video did you have any idea where you were headed other than straight to the wrong side of the barrel.
1st barrel setup .. non existent
2nd barrel setup .. death grip on saddle horn wrong side of barrel had to sweep horse wrong direction after it should have changed leads
3rd barrel setup .. same as 2nd barrel
Running home ... death grip on saddle horn ..
At no time did you square yourself and horse up by riding two handed between barrels prior to setting up ..
Practice exact hand placement and movements at walk, trot, lope that will be your automatic movements/ muscle memory at speed ... and for goodness sakes ... choose you a spot of ground to head to and not the barrel ...
Work on your finesse' ..
YOU HAVE A VERY SOLID WELL WORKING HORSE!!

I think you are nuts.... for a variety of reasons.
A.) You are supposed to grab the horn when turning a barrel. Unless you want your butt in the dirt anyways.
B.) What the heck do you mean 'wrong side'??
C.) You can't even see her hands when she is going to third or approaching second, but I think she does go two handed when setting up for third.
There are many horse who can lope the pattern at home in a snaffle but need more bit when you run. It's not got anything to do with lack of confidence in training, its about doing what the horse likes best. You win more working with the horse than you do working against it, and refusing to use a different bit is just crazy. |

Location: Ky | BARRELHORSEUSA....Thanks for your input, but I don't work mine pocket to pocket. I go barrel to barrel and ask them to step over. Everyone does it different. I have had her since she was 3(she is 5 now) and she was started as pocket to pocket, but she was way too wide for my liking. She is very smart and athletic, but her stops are not the best. She had a problem with being light in the front end (rear) when I first got her so I didn't stop and back her much at all. Just recently i did put her back in a g. martingale working on stops and backing. So far so good. AND THANK YOU, SHE IS A VERY NICE WORKING HORSE! NOT SOLID YET THOUGH. We have yet to enter our first barrel race. May happen Sat. I am proud of where she is right now!! Would like to get a nice running bit and go back to training bit when she need some tuning.

| I train in the same bit that I run in. When I have one working just the way I want, I stick with that bit since I really want the exact same results when I go to a barrel race. The main thing that I see as a problem in the video is that the horse comes off the second barrel and immediately picks up the right lead. If the horse changes to the left lead right at the barrel it will start dropping its shoulder in the turn. This is something that needs to be taught at a slow lope before progressing. Any horse, even a trail horse, should pick up the lead that you ask for, immediately. |

If I have a small alleyway, She will sometimes go in on the wrong lead. I correct it when I can and of course, do it correctly at home. I am just ignoring it for now, hoping as we add speed she will quit. Horses are due for some chiro as well.

| Looks like the Dutton 3 piece would work well. I like the Molly Powell "The Rookie" - 3/8" Twisted Sweet Iron Dog Bone or Sharon Camarillo Tender Touch Bit. Something with a fixed gag (sorry if that's not the correct terminology) and straighter shanks will give you a quicker response. If you don't want to spend a lot of money trying to figure it out, try a Jr. Cow horse 3- piece bit. I think this bit is underrated but Ive had a lot of success with it. |

Yes, I do like the Dutton. I wll check out your suggestions. I think I have a jr cow horse, but it's a smooth snaffle and I don't like it much. I actually put a "fixed gag" short shank with a chain mouth on her today. She worked good in it. May try it out tomorrow. It is a Sheri Cervi, so it is a bit heavy. Makes me leary because u can't grab this horse. I have to remember to let her work. Thank you! |

Have you ever tried to run her to the left first?
Yes I have! She knows the pattern left as well. I had issues with her rearing on first and second barrel. Her right barrel was the first problem, got that fixed and she started the rear on the 2nd barrel. SMH. If I skipped the turn on the first, she would turn the 2nd no problem, I finally turned her left and worked her that way for awhile. When I turned her back right she did a lot better. She would still rear and lung off the 2nd out of the blue, so I put a tie down on her and she has been good ever since. Her circles to the left are better than her circles to the right. |

Your horse is VERY nice!! I really like her a lot I wish she was mine! lol |
