I have used both Cowboy Magic, and Show Sheen products for my horses hair. I like both. I saw where someone said show sheen has alcohol in it, and can cause weak hair strands. Wanting your feedback as well.  What else helps a horses mane grow/promotes shine? Some use coconut oil, put vegetable oil in their feed, keep the mane braided...   What do you do?

I've used them all.. the best I've come across is Premiere Equines rose conditioner. Smells wonderful. Summer months I wash with their shampoo too. I love all their stuff! But the leave in rose conditioner is my favorite

Neither as both are not good for the hair. They attract dirt for one thing which can clog pores and keep the mane/tail from maximum growth. Like the poster above me said, Eqyss. Most all the show people I know use this. I can't think of even seeing a bottle of showsheen around in ages at the shows. Every piece of dust will stick to it. I'm not sure of ingredients but when asked about using it or CM, I was told not to.

I agree that both Showsheen and Cowboy Magic are NOT good for the hair. I want to say it is the silicone in it???

I use those products very sparingly when I show and/or when dealing with a nasty bundle of burrs.

I found this Healthy Hair Moisturizer and I just love it! You mix 1 part with 8 parts water.
https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/healthy-haircare-hair-moisturizer-233
Leaves the hair super shiny and you can use it over their entire body. And it's not sticky and doesn't attract dirt. Completely eliminates static too.

I'll be odd man out.  I've used Show Sheen for years.  All my horses' tails drag the ground, all have beautiful manes.  Can't be too bad.

I buy a jar of Olive Oil deep conditioner from the ethnic haircare section at Walmart. Its cheap, leave in, smells great and doesnt leave them greasy. I make sure to rub it into the tail head and base of the mane as well and have had great results.

Slather with Mane N Tail Conditioner and let it be.  That's for growth.  It gums up pretty good in the dirt, but it moisturizes.

For shine, I LOVE Champion Pepi

Can I add in a question as well on the topic? Has anyone ever colored their horses manes and tails? My horses mane and tail were fried from previous owner. Part nutrition part sun. I want to dye it black and moisturize heavily. Any advice or exceptions?

keep it clean, shampoo maybe once a week and lots of conditioner, even leave in conditioner. Then braid with the tail bags that have the 3 tubes so no hair on hair in the braid. It eliminates break off and will keep the sun off and the conditioner from gathering too much dirt. I wouldn't color. That is a vicious cycle and will damage the hair.

Yes it is the silicone that isn't good, I remember now that it is mentioned. I have horses that have tails that drag the ground out in pasture that haven't been brushed in 3 yrs. Also have broodmares with manes that hang to their shoulders so it can happen even if you use bad product and/or don't mess with them. Genetics, but if you want to do it right and make for really soft and healthy hair, go with Eqyss.

We have used only show sheen for years - horse has a long flowing mane and it does wonders on her coarse tail. I personally hate cowboy magic, it just doesn't work as well.

I know a lot of people that are allergic to the Mane N Tail. It makes me break out, my brother's eyes swelled shut after just touching my horse that had been bathed with it. No idea what is in it, but you couldn't give it to me.

On a similar note, I know a lot of horses that are allergic to pyrahna fly spray.

Best thing to grow nice manes and tails is good nutrition and DONT brush them! That is the #1 thing. I dont even think I own a brush. Always pick with your fingers. And when I do put something on them, I use a moisturizer that comes in a small jug that you mix up yourself, its pink but I can't remember the name many good feed stores have it I know Teskeys sells it. Healthy Hair Moisturizer I want to say its called? Spray it thorughout and especially rub it in at the base. Of course there will always be some horses, just like people, who simply don't have good hair

We have one that I have never touched his tail.  It also drags the ground, mostly from the weight of all the snarls and twists in it.  It is a mess.

I went to a friends house she had several horses bred all different everyone of them had long mane and tails. She said that she uses Pink from walmart in the Pink bottle. and only brushes mane and tail when she takes them somewhere. It works! It will make let the mane grow fast too. I have a horse that loves to rub his mane off in the middle. The trick is to use 2x week if trying to grow out and then once a week just to maintain. It is super cheap and a quarter size in palm goes a long ways and not greasy Oh and you just leave in.

First of all I have to ask, what color is the horse you are wanting to dye?

I had an older grey halter horse (that had turned mostly white) at one time. One day, I got the brainiac idea to dye his mane and tail black, like it was in his youth. We covered him with a large shower curtain all duct taped close to his body and proceeded to dye him. To make a long story short, he came out of it with the prettiest Royal Blue tail you have ever seen. I was almost in tears, but after a few beers with the friend who helped me, we found it funny.

She's a dark bay so her mane and tail are black but red/orange at the ends. Thank you!

The best way to grow manes and tails is to leave them alone and get some really good nutrition into them. Rice bran, Alfalfa, Farriers Formula, etc, for 6 months to a year. When bathing, use a good conditioner and rinse it off. Don't comb or brush unless getting really tangled. Fly spray through the summer is imperative to keep them from beating their tails out.

Coconut Oil, Work it in the base and leave it, can also be used to detangle the hair. The body can absorb it and it won't cause breakage. Show Sheen and Cowboy Magic contain silocones and alcohol which will dry the hair out more. Vitamin E works good too, to feed and to rub on scratches, bald spots, and tail and manes.

HEAD TO THE ETHNIC SECTION!!! I buy bottles of different hair oils there for cheap and they work GREAT!!!! I buy large bottles of Aussie shampoo at Walmart with the big pump and buy Suave Sleek/smoothing conditioner. Scrub the roots super good, condition, and then separate a path down the tailbone to sparingly pour the oil. I then put the oil on the tail itself. I always keep mine in tailbags so I do not have to worry about collecting dust. The next time I take their tails down, every month during the winter, they are usually still oily from the last time.

LOL We have dyed many manes and tails over the years, never had one turn blue. I do remember using horse spray paint to try and cover up a bad clipping job.... and it turned the horse purple.

We do nothing with ours and most have really nice tails- even the POA has a decent tail for her genetic potential.  We keep the tails a little shorter on the rope horses, and I guess it helps if we really don't care if they have a fancy tail or not (haha).  If I see that mine are rubbing their tails, I put a little liquid ivermectin "chap stick" around their anus and they stop.  Our tails are rarely washed or brushed.

I keep a bottle of the marigold around, love the smell. Also the Micro Tek shampoo is a God send for rain rot or any other skin irritation. Stuff works wonders! I get all that from tsc..

You know, I used their oils and hair products when I was showing steers & heifers. It was so light and SO much cheaper than the brand name products. I don't know why I never thought to use it on horses!!

Mane and Tail as far as any detangler or conditioning goes. Used to work for a big time team roper (odd right?) that swore by it and I saw the results. I also worked for a reined cowhorse trainer that had a system in which I never saw it fail. Condition the tails thoroughly, let dry, then braid them and soak them in glycerin (ethnic section at Walmart). Then we would fold the tail up and wrap in vet wrap. We redid them every 2 weeks or as necessary. Every horse's tail drug grew multiple inches inbetween. I will see if I can attach pictures.

I don't know if this does anything for growth but it sure makes a nice shine.  It's a recipe for a homemade spray I found and made up a batch last week.  I tripled it and it filled 2 spray bottles.

1/4 Cup any kind of hair conditioner
14 Cup baby oil
3 Tb vinegar
1/4 Cup water
I also added a couple drops of Eucalyptus oil (smells good and helps remove residue)
Mix altogether.  If it seems a little too thick add a little more water.  Pour into old spray bottles.

You have to shake it real well before spraying.  When it is warm enough I'n going to try to rub some of this into the base of the mane and tail and see if it helps with growth too.

I agree with the coconut oil. I actually just made some homemade detangler the other day.

I used a half cup of fractionated coconut oil, EVOO (2 table spoons), lavender essential oil(2 drops), and mixed with water. So far so good!
I made sure I really got his tail head good and then just ran my fingers though.

Afterwards, he wanted to lick my hands!
