Which do you prefer a hard seat? Or a padded suede or hide covered seat? Also, do you prefer roughout or smooth?I'm looking for a second saddle and I came across a nice used one, but it has smooth leather and a buffalo hide seat. I'm worried it will be too slick and I'll slide around. I've always had at least roughout jockeys and a suede seat. I have never ridden in a hard seat or an all smooth saddle.Just curious to see what everyone prefers and why. Thanks!

A slick seat doesn't bother me. I prefer rough out jockeys and tooled fenders. I've had stingray, ostrich, croc print, & elephant print. Liked them all.

Hard seats are becoming really popular. They intrigue me, but I don't see my self purchasing one. Curious on how people like them?

I really love my hard seat, and my padded. If that makes sense at all?!

Padded preferred. I can ride a roughout, but can't sit a slick seated saddle.

Thanks for the responses! I'd be willing to try a hard seat but I think I would want it to be roughout - anything to help me stick a little better! :

How does a hard seat feel/ride different from a padded seat?

I have a Double J padded elk seat, and a Tami Semas inlayed hard seat. Basically just more cushion, hard to explain??

I really do love both, almost like my hard seat better though.

I like smooth everywhere, but then again I'm not going super fast around any barrels. I don't like how "stuck" suede and roughout make me feel but smooth leather, if you need a little extra grip, you can always add sadl-tite to. Unfortunately ALL my saddles have ended up being suede seats with roughout for various reasons. I'm cursed!

I prefer a padded seat - love elk or elephant hide, I don't do suede anymore. I also prefer roughout jockeys and fenders.

The memory foam seat in my JJ sure is nice.  It's not a suede nor a slick leather.  It is a man made material.  I like it over the hard seat I previously had by far!

I had a hard seat on my Crown C. It wasn't bad, but I disliked how the saddle rode. I think that was just more the way the saddle was built and not because of the lack of padding.

I have had elephant print (with padding) on my last two Double Js and I really like that, but considering going with a hard seat on my Purdy. I think there is enough padding on my bum to make up for a lack of it on the actual saddle.

I log a lot of miles in my barrel saddles keeping horses legged up so I need a padded seat. My butt bones don't like me very much otherwise, haha.

As far as roughout or smooth, I can do either. My saddles happen to be roughout, but was more-or-less because the saddle fit my horse and that was more important.

That's what I was thinking about for a Purdy saddle too... possibly a hard seat (he said that is his personal favorite).

See that's what I thought about a hard seat too, but from what I've read they are actually more comfortable for long days (a lot of ranch hands have hard seat saddles). I wonder if you feel any closer to your horse since you have less padding?

I have a hard seat JJ PRO and an alligator Pozzi. I love them both. The hard seat is definitely much stickier. The alligator is slick, but I don't mind it so much because it has roughout jockies.

I like the padded seats, I have no padding on my butt so need it somewhere, lol.
I dont like the hide covered, they are slicker, but like the rough out jockeys

I don't have enough padding (I have noassatall) for a hard seat, so I prefer cushioned.

I also like to have that little extra grab on the fenders, so rough out for me.

Both my stock saddle and my barrel saddle are hard seat. I prefer hard seat over a padded seat for aesthetics only. I really can't tell a difference between a hard seat and padded seat. I don't think it makes me feel closer to my horse, I just think it has a cleaner look. As for the padded seat having "more padding" for your butt bones, if a padded saddle has been rode long and hard enough that padding gets pressed down and becomes hard anyways. Your seat feel comes from the ground seat that's put in the saddle.

My stock saddle is custom built on a modified association tree, hard seat, slick leather. I have spent days on end in this saddle. I have drug calves, turned steers, and even ran barrels in it.

My barrel saddle is a Trent Ward, hard seat with an alligator bicycle inlay in rough out.. I LOVE the ground seat in this saddle. The alligator is not slick and the knobby bumps do not hurt my butt.
