Two products I really like are Curost stomach and forefront equine digest. The Curost product is pretty darn expensive. Another one I have used is jerimiah ulcer repulcer.

Smart Pak GI Ultra. There was a study done on this with great results. I read it in "The Horse".  I've used it after my horse got a grade 3 ulcer 2 years ago. Haven't had any problems since.

I've used gut I ntegrity from Oxygen. Oxymax is also a good product. Martha and Ed Wright endorse it. Covers ulcers, lungs, joints. You don't need another supplement when you use it. Forefront equine also has a good product.

I am doing this right now, however, I don't think she needs to be on it all year round...looking for something after this is done.

I use and love Forco, but not sure it does anything for ulcers. Keeps the belly happy though.

I revamped my feed program and elminated all grains on anything that I can. Pasture horses just get pasture, salt & mineral. They don't even get supplements. They do get a handful of oats just to keep them coming to the pickup when I honk and check on them. Anything in the corral has free choice hay. They used to make a mess of their round bale, but I bought a slow feed net and it keeps everything clean and they can still munch all day. The constant food in the belly does wonders to keep their stomach happy. The only thing I grain with actual processed grain is a super old pony gets Active Senior and so does my other old horse when he is in the corral for the kids to ride. My weanlings/yearlings are on Ultium Growth until they go out for spring grass sometime next month. If I am giving anything in the corral a supplement I use soaked alfalfa/beet pellets.

I second the Cur-OST products.  No acid buffers to affect nutrient assimilation or other side effects due to undigested food going into the hindgut.

I used to feed F1 Noni and I can't say it really does anything to the gut, but I haven't ever really had any gut issues. My horses looked good on it and I felt like my gelding ran harder on it though. If I had to pick one I'd choose THE. I think the best way to maintain the gut is a no corn or molasses feed, free choice grass hay, alfalfa, and lots of turn out.

I was told/under the assumption that once you have done a month with THE GastroPLUS then you only need to use it the day b4, day of and day after your race???

That works great for a lot of people. So much depends on how the horse's anxiety is. If they stress out bad on each haul, don't eat well for a couple days after you get home. Then they may need on something during your regular hauling season. But if they just get nervous the day you run them, but still eat fairly well. I do have some customers that feed it before they leave home, during and a couple days after they get back home.  It all depends on the horse.

Matt is feeding all his barrel horses Excel from DePaulo Equine Concepts, and I just started Cliff on it. Streak is eating SmartPak's SmartGI pellets and after a month of them, I think he's less nervous at races. Cliff is getting Excel because I could get ahold of it quicker than more SmartPaks because I had literally just gotten a new month of SmartPaks when I decided to try an ulcer product on Cliff. I think the Excel works out to be cheaper than SmartGI Ultra but about the same price as SmartGI.

I just looked up the Excel from DePaulo Equine. Looks very promising! I have watched his videos on how to tell if your horse may have an issue BUT I never knew he has a line of products. It does contain Aloe powder and Marshmallow root and a few other ingredients. I'm not real fond of probiotics being added but its $70 for a 115 day supply! Might have to look into that.

Forco is a pre biotic, which is fine. Probiotics fed daily have the tendency to over populate certain gut bacteria and leave others underpopulated. THis can lead to all sorts of stuff. The ones in commercial feeds are not usually equine specific, but the same ones found in lots of species. The ones FOREFRONT equine uses are equine specific, but I really don't like to use them. Horses should get all they need from their forage.

Matt started using it after another of our barrel racer friends switched to it from Forco. He said I should be giving a scoop morning and night for the first week, then cut it to once a day. The only thing I don't like is its a powder. Streak is a messy eater and since pellets are easier for him to clean up off the ground after he makes a mess, I try to stick to pelleted supplements for him. I'm hoping the Excel helps line Clifford out because if it doesn't I may be forced to admit that he's nuts. LOL.
