I actually did that a while back with a Jim W hack but he hated the nose pressure. I'm thinking about buying a Fred Hunter shanked bit but he's fairly sensitive and for some reason they look aggressive to me. Someone tell me if I'm wrong. |

Location: Kansas | All of mine are ratey and turny and I think I could run any of the 4 in a Jim Warner hack with a loose curb chain. Chance bounces between the Jim Warner and a chain mouth Rosie gag bit, Joker has run in a Jim Warner hack for years, Cliff is currently in a smooth mouth 3 piece Jr Cowhorse with a roller, and Streak is in a longer shanked smooth mouth 3 piece with a roller and more gag than the Jr Cowhorse. I'm not sold on that being the perfect bit for him but I needed a touch more rate at the first barrel than in the Jr Cowhorse and this was the closest thing to it in my trailer.
Matt's ratey turny mare runs in a Jim Warner hack so he can get her nose a bit and help her finish the third barrel. I also have a Coronet Trap Hack from ebay ($20-25 price range) that is kind of a combination of several hacks - warner, little S, bozo. I think I have a pic of it. Can't really get their nose as much with it but I like it when I need to free one up and I ride in it a lot at the house.

Location: 31 lengths farms | I was running my big ratey turney mare in a Beetle Hack or a sidepull at times. She kept getting more ratey, break off drills helped a ton but after taking her to an Ed Wright clinic he put us in a Pretzel and I thought "okay he's lost his mind!!! " but he had a good point too, not only was she rating hard, she was getting down in the front end and getting really sluggish in her feet, he wanted the Pretzel to help pick her front end up so her back end could reach up under her properly again. Had us do some figure 8 drills to work on foot speed. We got the "Whoo Momma!!!" and the little jig dance on our next work. I don't run her in it but do do the drills in it and work her in it then run in a 2 piece short shanked smooth. |

Just to be clear, by "Snaffle", I mean an O ring, D ring etc. Direct pull. Several people confuse the word snaffle and think it means a 2 piece jointed bit but that is incorrect. |

Yes you are right, those are going to be pretty severe. The mouth piece alone is going to put a lot of pressure on the tongue and bars. Add a long shank to that and it's a lot of bit |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | My ratey turny sucker needs lift that won't make him want to set harder, so I'm using a smooth 3 piece medium shank (I think it's the med) Neil Merrill gag. The real one, not the myler one. The myler one tucks him up too much. This one keeps him moving forward good. He also works good in a a turley hack. |

Location: My Own Little World | My ratey mare uses a Ronny Clampitt hackamore. I get plenty of body control and yet it really frees her up. It's as tough or as soft as I want it to be because I have 2 rings and a choice of where it sits on her nose and which curb strap I use. |
