Location: KS | My mare is showing signs of having ulcers. I was wondering, do you HAVE to get a horse scoped in order to treat them? Are there any products out there that you can just purchase online?
* If I HAVE to get her scoped, no problem, but I was just curious to see if you can just start a treatment right away. Any information would be helpful.

Location: Oklahoma | I don't scope, mostly because the two main vets that I use don't have the technology. I just tell the vet I suspect ulcers need some Omeprazole and start treatment right away. |

Location: Pacific Northwest | I've never had one scoped. I treated for 30 days with omeprazole and then started her on SmartGut Ultra and she's been good ever since. My mare was grouchy, dull coat and never ate anything. She will clean up everything you feed her now and is a lot friendlier. |

Location: My perfect world bubble | I just had mine scoped so I could see exactly what we were dealing with. He was ate up with scar tissue but no active ulcers, so we were able to put together a good plan to treat and maintain him. The scope was $150 so not that unreasonable. |

Location: NE TX | You don't have to scope but if you want to text you can have the vet do a Succeed test which is a fecal test. You can get Ranitidine from Sam's (cheapest place it's like $6.50 with tax for 180 pills) give 7 pills either crushed or straight in the feed. You can also have your vet call in a perscription for omeprazole powder to the compounding pharmacy he/she uses and buy it straight from them and cut he vet cost out. Also Aloe Vera Juice is a good thing to add to your feeding it's good for a lot of different things, a cup a day plus it coats the feed for any supplements you add |

| We had a gelding that would NOT gain weight, kept having mysterious right hind limb lame, would crossfire terribly when "sound", wouldn't pick up his right lead without a fight etc. We spent a whole day at vet flexing, blocking, x raying to find NOTHING! We were told to stall him, put him on msn and bring back in 3 weeks to do scintography. In the meantime, I started researching online and I stumbled across an article written by vet about ulcers. My horse had every symptom except for colic although he would lay down after every ride. The right side mystery lameness, the crossfiring, the stiffness in the right shoulder etc. The article also listed effective ways to treat horses and how each treatment worked. Omeprazole, ranitidine as well as herbal/ holistic treatments. Here's what I did and how I maintain. It's worked AMAZINGLY! First, you must be willing to change your feeding program if you feed commercial, processed foods. Ulcers are caused by these, as well as stalling, trailering and performance. You have to be aware of this and willing to manage it differently.
Treatment: 30 days of Ranitidine. I got mine from vet. I fed 10 pills 3x a day for 30 days then 10 pills 2x a day for 2 weeks then 10 pills 1x for 2 weeks. I fed him soaked Sun dried alfalfa cubes (no artificial junk) #1 of rice bran and 1# Purina Enrich. He also gets alfalfa 2x daily as well as complete turnout. Herbs I use daily. Marshmallow root 1c Turmeric 1T with a splash of flaxseed oil, Spirulina 1T, Slippery Elm 1T and Aloe Vera juice 1c. I buy all these online and feed to ALL my horses now and they look/feel better than ever. You can buy products already mixed such as Cur ost or animal elements but I buy online in bulk bc it's more affordable to feed 5 horses this way.

Location: Idaho | I think it is interesting when people say, don't get your horse tested or scoped just treat. Ulcer's are a constant problem, if your horse has them then after it is treated then is MUST be maintained, or else your money will go to waste.
There is a test you can do, that is relatively cheap. Talk to your vet about having your horse's manure tested for blood. Even though it could mean other problems, the highest probability is that they have ulcers. It cost me like $36 to get that done on one gelding I had. I treated him 60 days with omeprazole, then I maintained it 1 cup (60 cc's) of pure Aloe vera juice a day, plus put him on a slow feeder. Even after a week of being on omeprazole, it was amazing how different he was. Calm, relaxed, almost if he was so happy he didn't have anymore pain as the omeprazole decreases the reduction of acid in their stomach and allows their stomach to HEAL and then the aloe vera juice, is clinically proven to reduce and eliminate stomach ulcers in horses. And it's cheap.. I bought the all natural version from the local Whole foods, 1 gallon was $20 and it lasted the entire month.

Your talking about the Succeed test. I asked my vet about it few years ago and she told me it was very unreliable. She did not feel it was worth the cost of the test. |

Location: God's country...aka TEXAS | You cant scope for hind gut ulcers anyway. So i just treat them. Every horse has ulcers at some point. OxyUlcer by Oxygen is the best. |

| Glad I found this post. I have been dealing with my mare cross centering on the right. I was so confused because she doesn't seem to have any soreness in her SI area, stifle or hock. I am planning on taking her to the vet for an exam and will ask him about the ulcers possibly causing this.

Location: Sunny So Cal | I don't scope and I use GastroPLUS. Omeprozale isn't good for long term use so I feel like if you are always using it without knowing it may cause more harm then good. I tend to stick with natural and holistic remedies that have research to go with them. I also love that it isn't just for ulcers, but also for digestion and stomach health as well. I figure I am getting the most bang for my buck. |

| I just treat with omeprazole now and most of the time. I have started treating a little different now I do a 1/4 for 30 days and they are on marshmellow root and aloe. I used curost stomach and calm and adapt on several. I have also used Ucklele gut with success or I just buy bulk and mix my own. This has worked really well. I had 20 to treat this spring and into summer due to toxic hay that gave every horse on the place ulcers, the only one to was ok was the one mare who was currently being treated with curost stomach and had finished omeprazole in the fall. |

| My friends horse was having some pain issues in his right side.....long story short vet did acupuncture and told her the horse had ulcers. She also said his whorl bones were sore and she injected them and his shoulder and put the horse on ulcergard for 21 days. 7 days administer whole tube last 14 days half a tube a day. 14 tubes of the gastrogard cost her just shy of 700 dollars! That is just horrible !

| Took a broodmare today I suspected of having ulcers. Chronic colic, going off feed and lost a bunch of weight. Had her scoped and she was clean. She had a blockage, I forget the veterinary term, of seeds from like mesquite trees. We also did an xray of belly along with fecal test for sound and she had tiny rocks in addition to sand. Scope was like $100 and treatment requires tubal medicine by vet to break all that up. She'll be at vet for 2 days and it's still going to be cheaper than "just treating her" for ulcers, glad I listened to my gut on her bc ulcer meds would've been a waste of $ |

Omeprozole does not get hind gut ulcers.
Hinder gut has a low percentage to having ulcers and vets can't scope for it any how. Don't worry about it. Concentrate where the percentage of ulcer appear. |
