Location: south central usa | a mouse was recently "trapped" (ie caught in a mouse trap) underneath a co-worker's desk - the co-worker who is scared of everything that moves.
so my phone has a chirp that does sound like a mouse...she has asked me to change it to something else...what does society think? change it or leave it be? :-) |

The " Law" says you can be accused of creating a hostile working environment but cannot make you change the tone. But you can be moved, transfered, etc to make the other person feel safe. If an employer refuses to do so it would be pretty easy trial and the person with the phobia would not likely ever have to work again. |

I am curious if she said she is trying to deal with it and can't cope. It is a small thing to change your ringtone but I agree with the bigger picture of this and how our society feels they need to be catered to, that imposing on others is ok but not vice versa.

I agree with this.
Now I understand trying to get along, I work in an office with 6 other people, and we all try to be considerate. But I feel some people are getting ridiculous about it. Guess that is the entitlement generation..... |

| "mouse" sounding or not, I find tones pretty irritating in the office in general. I always leave mine on silent. I don't even like when I have mine sitting on my desk and it vibrates lol. |

Location: south central usa | i work with headphones on - thus the reason for not putting it on vibrate. I don't think anyone else's is on silent/vibrate either. i'll probably change if for no other reason that to not have to answer the "was that your phone..?" question. the tone is simply the default notification sounder for most android phones...not like I found a mouse ringtone |

| I keep mine on vibrate at work, and I do find it annoying when other people don't. I am on a big floor with 40 other people. There's always a beep, tone, ding, etc. going off all day. I wouldn't dare ask everyone in the office to change their ringtones just because I don't like it. How silly. It's an office. There are going to be noises. I have other things to worry about at work besides my coworkers phones! haha |

Additionally, as a past supervisor, I am within my legal rights, in the workplace, to make you TURN OFF your cell phone....period.....so, that being said, changing the ringtone or turning it to vibrate might be your best choice. As far as the posts regarding "entitlement"....the OP is NOT "entitled" to have a cell phone in the workplace unless it is "work related"...... |

I also work with headphones on. I just have my phone propped up near me on vibrate. I can see it light up if someone is calling/texting me. No big deal. |

Lol... at my place of work you better not get your panties in a wad over every tiny little thing.... We find mice and other crawling creepies all the time...
Most off the time I prefer them over people anyway.... not nearly as much drama... Plus I can have any ring tone I want....

| Every time your phone "squeaks" slip her a piece of chocolate, it's like positive reinforcement and pretty soon she will get excited when you get a notification! But honestly I would probably change it if it really bothers her, it wouldn't be worth the fight for me :) |

| I teach school and we all try to help each other as much as possible. We are not allowed to even charge our phones much less use them. We all do our best to work with each other. It makes for the greatest work environment. We don't even have to make an effort to get along we work so well together. I get up every morning eager to get to school. Can't you at least try to get along I really think I would make you feel better too. Also, you NEVER know when you might need a coworker to help you in some way. |

| I don't know what type of environment you work in and what the need for the phone is. If your cell phone is not a necessary part of your job, shut it off or put it on vibrate. You can keep it within eyesight so that you can check for a notification or call if you really need to be accessible.
Listening to people's phones is a serious peeve of mine. If you don't want to answer a call, push your button to stop the phone from ringing. And preferably within about 3 seconds of it going off. If it has to be on your desk, you can get to it that fast to shut if off.

| Oh the day when no one had a cell phone and this wasn't even an issue. The need to be in constant contact with others while at work was not a concern. If someone needed you, it was on the work phone (plugged into the work wall) & it was rare (except work related calls). Just speaking of a kid who called her parents at work rarely because they were not allowed to spend time on the phone except for work. I even remember....... "you called me at work for this?" LOL trouble
I'm kind of old school. Who is everyone calling or texting all day anyway? Isn't everyone else at work too? Isn't everyone too busy all day to visit except during breaks only? Maybe the job is slow? Now, I know there are times in emergencies, medical issues, family issues, etc that require having a phone nearby and using it often so don't bash me just yet. I know the way of the world has changed now. We can't be on our phones except during breaks. I'm rarely even use mine then.
Silence the phone & put it where you can see it light up when someone contacts you if you must stay in contact with the outside world. Not sure why everyone in a workplace would not put their phones on silence just out of courtesy for others? What about during meetings? Do all of the employees use their phones then and with sound?
Even at work some will come to the meetings with their phones, place them on the table, and we all have to hear it vibrate the table when it goes off. Why can't you leave it for a meeting? They disagree with me just like all of you will as well. They don't see it as being disrespectful to the speaker or the boss who is addressing the group. Then they act surprised when the darn thing goes off!!! Really? You brought it with you to text someone who isn't there and you are surprised when it goes off? Nice fake try, but no one buys that! haha Funny thing......... when they are face to face with the person they've texted all day and can't wait to see........... They are on their phone texting, checking Facebook, etc. haha Fear Of Missing Out..... FOMO.
If it is a cell phone that is required for work, then consult your boss on the rules for ringtones. I wouldn't want someone to be under stress just because of a ringtone I could easily change although your ringtone seems to be less annoying many other options out there. If ringtones are common in your workplace, it does seem like an odd request.
Go ahead and flame me everyone and then get back to work. LOL

I just saw where you typed it is a "work related" cell phone. I thought it was your personal cell phone because you said you wore headphones at work. I assumed you were communicating on the headphones. I don't know what type of work you do, but if it requires a work cell phone then I would check with the others to see what is expected. If it is a work phone, I would assume the bosses or company have a certain code for what type of ringtones are allowed. I would be more worried about the inappropriate language that some might have on their phones which is unprofessional unless you work at inappropriate language music store or something. LOL |

If I remember correctly, your work does not keep you in an office with others or around many people throughout the day. That song by yourself wouldn't cause any issues. If you were working as a church secretary, it might be an issue. LOL |

You should set it to the 5 tone melody to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" -- probably the most jarring sound anybody over the age of 30 has ever heard.
