| No, but registered names aren't a big deal to me . We once had a horse whose registered name was Born Loser! His barn name was Happy, because he was and he was a cool horse. I can't understand why they named him that. But that was waaaay back in the day when no one used registered names and we rodeoed only. |

Location: Tenn. | I change almost all of the mares/fillies names that we purchase. However I am working on building my own herd of broodmares and would like for their names to be somewhat decent. I have an own daughter of Elan's Playboy and her name was QRS PLAYBOY BUNNY, that wasn't going to fly with me. If the names are decent I don't mind keeping them the way they are. In my opinion it is your horse and if you want to pay the extra money go for it. If you feel like the ranch that it came from is important I would leave it in there, it could be a selling point in the future. For instance "JB" always grabs my attention at the front of a registered name. (Or number in their case) |

| If you hate your horses name, then change it. I have changed names before. When you buy the horse, its yours to do whatever you want with it. Some people name horses really dumb names, ha. |

Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking when they come up with some of these names. If I had to guess the breeder was a bit tipsy at the time! |

| I had a colt that I sold to my ex-husband when we divorced. He had me take care of registering him. At the time we had just had another huge fight so when I sent in his papers, I named him "FR Never Again". This colt is going to be a head horse so I doubt anyone would ever know his name, but my ex-husband didn't appreciate me naming him that. |

Location: Sunnyland Florida | I think there are quite a few reasons people change the names.
You have to listen to that name called out time and time again (along with your name), you better like it.
Horses with initials before or after the name often get removed/renamed. If the breeder has branded the horse, their initials/brand/identity is there. I don't like initials on papers & usually rename them, although I totally understand why breeders do the initial thing. I don't feel the horses' name is the place to advertise where they came from. Bloodlines, yes. Farm or Ranch name/initials, no.

That is a classic, love it! I had a friend who got their expensive stud horse in the divorce, so she renamed the stud horse after her attorney who won her the horse, LOL. |

| I dont see anything wrong with changing a name. But I have to tell you I dont think I have ever heard a worse name than a gelding I ride. His name is Ole Doc Thunder Buck! Terrible! I dont even like putting it on entry forms. I really wish I would have changed it when I got him. But once they have won money you cant change it I dont think, but that may just be at AQHA stuff.
I have thought about changing the name of my stud colt that is 2 but Its really not too bad. I do however get tired of hearing fame and streak in names lol My colt is out of Streaking ta fame and His name is A Streakof Magic and everyone assumes he is out of A streak of Fling and then I have to tell them no :( |

Location: North of where I want to be | I will admit I am not a fan of the initials in a registered name. I also am not a fan of double branding. My guy came from the Jud Little Ranch and now also has a brand on him from the local trainer I bought him from. I HATE IT! |

Location: Desert Land | I'm glad that once they have been raced/shown/bred you cannot change their name. As a breeder, I don't like that someone could change the name - then I will have a hard time tracking the horse in the future. |

hmm, my cousin didn't have a problem changing her mares name and she has been to plenty of barrel races within the year it's taken to get it changed. |

I'm sure she was referring to AQHA events only. Anything else you can change the name, which is sad because equistat can't keep up with them.
Rodeos or jackpots do not matter. |

Got it, I realized that is what she was probably meaning after I responded.

I'm probably the odd one out here too, but I completely agree. I also like to keep tabs on them, etc. I have a friend who changes every horse she buys. Personally, it drives me batty. Granted, I understand its your horse, do what you want. But I also felt it was a slap in the face when she bought one from our program and changed it. To me that's saying "sorry, your name choice isn't good enough". She also never plans to show or breed, so why is the registered name that important when he goes by a barn name of her choice? If you want to pick a registered name, breed one or buy a weanling. I feel that the breeder has put the time, money and effort into putting the foal on the ground, and therefore have earned the right to name it. |

| I had never changed a name until recently. Nice colt with a name that had to have been cooked up after way too many beers. Frankly embarrassing and didn't even include the nice bloodline the colt had.
I changed it before he'd ever been entered. |
