 These are all names of the same drug, polysulfated glycosaminoglycan, and the same potencies.  It appears the only two differences are what they are labeled to treat and how much they cost (prices from Valley Vet)

Adequan: joints $91.90/10ml
Ichon: post surgical lavage $53.90/10ml
Chondroprotec: wound treatment $56.95/10ml

What am I missing here???  Can you use all three of these drugs interchangeably?

 I guess I should add that my vet sold me a bottle of Chondroprotec and said it was generic Adequan - but, I thought I've heard there is no such thing??  Now, I see that Ichon is even cheaper!

They all do contain PSGAGS but they are not all the same. Some horses only respond to the adequan some to the others. Adequan is 5ml not 10.

I know Adequan is 5ml, I just doubled the 5ml price to compare to the others.

Check the concentrations .... from a quick look at the manufacturer label information that was linked on Valley Vet:

ICHON = 100 mg/mL
CHONDROPROTEC = 100mg/mL

ADEQUAN = 500mg/mL

Also, each is manufactured by a different company - so they may all be derived from different tissue sources. For example, the Chrondroprotec available from Valley Vet is from bovine trachea. However, other polysulfated glycosaminoglycan products have been made from pig cartilage, fish cartilage, and bird cartilage.

A quick google can lead you down the trail of how each of these tissue sources either works in an equine system or may be more fit for a human system based on the molecular weight and "bio-availability" ($10 word meaning ability of that mammal to use the drug or absorb it properly).

 Adequan is actually 500mg/5ml - making it the same concentration as the other 2.  Your other points were interesting, though.

thanks for explaining this.  Wondering also about the generic ones, are they regulated that Adequan is?

The difference between the three is their intended use and thus their molecular weights. Ichon is intended as a surgical wash and therefore has a lower molecular weight. It is designed to be directly absorbed into the joint capsule and does not have to be as heavy to survive for that absorption. Adequan, in contrast, is designed to be injected IM and survive in the bloodstream on its way to all the body's joint capsules. It has a much higher molecular weight. This does not mean Ichon absolutely will not work for your horse. It does contain the same basic active ingredient, and yes all 3 come from bovine trachea, but it may not survive long enough in its actual active form to do as much as Adequan. The savings in price is probably worth the gamble. But Adequan is the only one that can be expected to have significant results in the bloodstream.

That is not how that works .... sorry. The Adequan bottle comes in a concentration of 500 mg/mL in a total of 5 mL. 5 x 500 = 2500 mg of the active ingredients total for one bottle of adequan. In order to make it a concentration of 100 mg/mL as labeled by the others, you need to dilute it, a lot.

The other two bottles are labeled as 100 mg/mL. Thus, 100 mg x 10 mls gives you 100x 10 = 1000 mg total of the active ingredient.

I didn't read the "dose" recommended, but you will probably give more of the other two when compared to Adequan just because of the total concentration per mL of liquid in the bottle.

Make sense? I'm just trying to help here ..... ETA - you can't compare the costs of the three options offered by just doubling the cost, since you are buying different TOTAL amounts of the active ingredients, not just mLs that you give ...

Very true - and a better explanation of bio-availability than what I offered.

If you are asking if they work the same, I can tell you from my experience that I had good results with Adequan, Ichon, and Polyglycan. I did not use them all on the same horse, so I cannot give exact comparisons. But, they definitely each showed improvement.
However, my source had a huge price increase last year and the "off-brands" weren't much cheaper than the Adequan.

This is correct ^^^  500mg per 5 ml so the horse gets 500mg per one dose.
