Location: Red Raiderland | Just saw this slithering through the grass in our front yard. I think it's a rat snake and didn't want to kill it but my husband didn't care he just wanted it to be a "dead" snake! I just wanted him to move it out of the front yard and take it down by the trees. Nope, he killed it!

Aren't you the sm@rt@ss of the boards today. Actually, he didn't have a diamond shaped head but he did raise up and fan the sides of his neck just like a cobra! WTH?!? Hey, at least we keep the turkey buzzards fed around here....

When we see snakes with that color and the distict hour glass spots on their back they are going to die! We have tons of copperheads out here and they look eerily similar. It is that time of year now that I really have to watch my little dogs on our walks because there are a bunch coming out for the warm spring days. We usually kill at least a dozen a year. DIS-GUST-ING! |

That is a Eastern Hognose snake, very harmless and good to have around to eat mice and rats, I call them a puffer. Google them they are really a cool snake, they sure can scare the crud out of you when they do the spreading of the neck area. |

I knew it wasn't venomous. Dang it. I was googling it and I found the exact snake y'all are talking about. It did puff up and kept coming towards me but was probably trying to get back to the flower bed. Oh, well, now there is a frenzy over one two foot long snake. They fixin to throw down, Yo!

Location: Southeast Louisiana | I couldn't zoom in on your picture. But, that would be the right angle to tell if it's poisonous or not. If you can see their eyes from the top like that, they're not poisonous. That's been the easiest way for me to spot them, and you can see it from a pretty good distance. The venomous snakes have a ridge over their eyes and, when you're looking from the top, you can't see the little eyes because the ridge covers them.
I'll try to post some pics to show what I'm talking about. (wish me luck with that!)
NO LUCK! It's always so hard to attach pics, I give up.

Dang, I wish you could have gotten some pics posted. I go through the same thing having to resize the pics over and over in order to post them here. I use Paintshop to resize for BHW. |

Yep, and I think we could use it as I have seen a few mice outside on the front porch. He was worried that our two Dachshunds would try to attack it so he killed it. I did tell him what y'all said and he felt bad for killing it. So there's that. |

Location: Kansas | So funny story.....back when I was 18, I found a big black rat snake sun bathing. I dumped out my big red tote bag and stuck him in it. I was going to stick him in a friends bedroom as a prank......well, stupid me left the bag in my car for an hour, went back to get the snake and he had slithered out of my tote bag into my car. I literally was so afraid to drive my car, i would drive with cruise control on and my feet up on my seat LOL. I still never found him. |

I'm with you! I hate seeing them and if I do they are dead when I'm thru. Poisoness or not if it has opportunity to scare me it's dead. I used to kill between 8-12 a year close to my house and barn until my husband picked up a stray cat on the road. She is a hunting killing machine! We keep food out for her all the time but she is constantly on the prowl. I have seen 1 snake in the last two years. No mice in my barn either. Love her! |

I kill every snake I see. They feast on my toad population and those little guys feast on flies, spiders, roaches, junebugs, grasshoppers, you name it.

That is hilarious! I would seriously be freaked out to drive the car, too. Many years ago my brother had a rat snake in the house and of course it got loose and we all went looking and didn't find the thing until a few days later I walked into my parents' bathroom and it was slithering up the shutters! I shut the door and ran to get my dad and he got it and set it free outside. My stupid brother had no business having a snake in captivity. He was a teen that could barely take care of himself.... |

You just got to get mean and mean it.
Location: Arkansas | When my kid's were in high school, we lived in an area that had a lot of rocks and COPPER HEAD SNAKES!! To me, the only good snake is a dead snake! My youngest son told me that the way you could tell if a snake was poisoness was to look at the shape of their scales! Like I was going to get close enough to a snake to take note of the shape of their scales!!! I might take a closer look....after I've used a shovel on it and made sure there was no wiggle left in it! |
