My mare is having some issues on the pattern. She will turn her first barrel beautifully but it gets progressively worse from there. When finishing first and heading to second she will start to raise her head a bit and kind of flip her nose a bit. Then coming into second I can feel a touch of her wanting to flare her hind end out just a bit and then her second turn gets a little ratty. Then coming out of second she will sometimes crossfire and still have the lead in the hind but will be out of it in the front, then goes to turn third and seems to kind of stretch out and try to swing herself around. I basically loped her the whole last season and didn't really make a run and this is where we are. What is the solution lameness aside? Thanks :)

Basics... No pattern work lots and lots of basics....

That's only because you said lameness aside.

I have learned this the hard way after many years, even the most poorly trained horse at the race won't act like that if they are sound. The horse is hurting, get it fixed, or else you will ruin the horse. I know it's not what you want to hear but maybe you have tosit out the season and save your money if that's an issue, but I gurantee that's what it is. Take her to a proper lameness vet not your local vet.

Give her 2grams of bute about 4 hours before you run her next time, if she does better then she is probably hurting somewhere and she should go get checked out.

If her pattern is the same on bute, then slow work her both directions, loping circles and focus on holding her leads, its possible she is just weak and needs to be strengthened OR she could just be confused as to where her feet should be going into her turn. Because she does turn the first and not the second or third, you could also maybe try her to the left barrel first and see what happens.

Good luck!

Yes. Even bute or other pain meds won't help most of the time because they still think it's gonna hurt.

From what you described it sounds like she's hurting pretty bad.. Not your fault, it happens, you just gotta get it taken care of.

I agree here - I know I sound like a broken record (I'm a vet, I can't help it! LOL) but in my experience crossfiring and not wanting to turn from the hind end are 2 of the classic signs of hind end (hock and/or stifle) pain. Honestly, I'd recommend a lameness exam and go from there.  I'd do it now rather than let the problem get bigger. If hocks/stifles simply need injected, you won't have to sacrifice your whole season. Good luck!!

I agree with the above posters, sounds like a pain issue going on, have a good lameness vet go over her, but if this was me and my horse I would have the best Chiro check her out and go from there. Pluse this horse is telling you something is wrong with the raising of the head and crossfiring.

I do agree. If the horse is conditioned, I would certainly look into pain issues.

CLASSIC PAIN SYMPTOMS...listen to the other posters, and get to a GOOD lameness vet, not the local horse/cow vet. You are wasting your time if you do not go. I don't mean to sound blunt, but I'm 99.9% sure you've got lameness issues. Hocks/stifle, can be fixed with injections, you're only off a week. You do NOT want to drill your poor horse when it is in pain. Please go. A lameness exam is probably under $75...is your horse worth that to you?

I love how you all assume that because I said lameness aside that automatically gives you the option to act as if I'm not going to get her looked at and you can jump my case. Maybe I said that because I am obviously aware that it could very well be the issue and I am going to get an evaluation done without any of you all giving me your two cents. I hope you all have a wonderful day and thank you for your input. I think we can accomplish great things if we build each other up rather than come down on each other.

Wow.  I thought they gave you great advice, that is what you asked for after all.  There is no solution to your problem if soreness is causing it.  Your post inferred that you preferred to not consider lameness.  Don't ask for advice and then get mad when you're given it!

You just Describe a horse that has some issues, since you say its not lameness issues then I would be checking to make sure your saddle is not causing her to be sore, the raising of her head and cross firing and stretching out and trying to swing as you describe sounds like soundness are being sore issues.
You asked for the advice and you got what we read in your post, we went on how you decribe your horse.

I don't think anyone was coming down on you. I replied to your post because I want to HELP you and your horse. If you didn't want people to respond with suggestions, then why did you post asking for suggestions?

I dont think anyone was trying to come down on you. They are simply saying that a properly broke horse does not respond in the way you are saying unless something is wrong. But I can try to answer by only talking about training. . . "she will start to raise her head a bit and kind of flip her nose a bit" I would say that you need to get her a little more soft and responding to your hands a little better.
"I can feel a touch of her wanting to flare her hind end out just a bit and then her second turn gets a little ratty" You need to make sure you do plenty of slow work and make her keep her rear end under her. Anytime she shifts it out, lope bigger circles until she can hold a good smooth lope with her hind in up under her, and then ask her to go back a little smaller. "she will sometimes crossfire and still have the lead in the hind but will be out of it in the front" If i am understanding this horse is turning to the left but has the right lead in front and left lead in back? Iv never even seen something like this, its usually the other way around. To the swinging rear at the 3rd, same as the 2nd barrel, lots of slow work keeping rear under her. . . hope that helps. Honestly though, a good Chiro should be able to help this horse it sounds like.
