I have a 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch.  I've used them all frequently depending on which horse and which saddle I'm using.    I'm currently ordering a turquoise one in 3/4.

I have more then a few 5 Stars in different thickness, but my favorite and go to's are my 1/2 and 3/4 pads. I ride different horses with different saddles. If your saddle fits really good I would go with the 3/4 pad.
What thickness is your pad that you are using now? Do you think its doing its job if so I would get that thickness of the pad your using now.

Good thread! I love 5 stars! I have 1/2 for my well fitting saddle on my wide horse and use a 3/4 Tod Slone on my narrow horse. I want to get him a 5 star too but not sure if I want a 3/4 or a 7/8.

I was thinking I would order a 3/4 or 7/8. My saddle fits decent and my horse has a pretty average shape. I may could get away with a 1/2 inch..but I guess a little extra padding never hurt anyone..

I have a 1/2", 3/4" and 7/8" I find I use the 3/4" ones the most.  My husband uses the 7/8" the most on his roping horse.

I have a 1/2" and 7/8". I like my 1/2" but actually feel my mare needs alittle more pad with my current saddle. So I'm selling it and will be getting a 3/4". I think the 3/4" and 7/8" are the most versitile.

I have a 1" and a 3/4". I will be ordering a 1/2" soon to go with my new saddle. I was told by the saddle maker I didn't need anything thicker than 1/2".

I was accustomed to using 1" pads (although compressed) so 7/8" was a good start for me.  Especially since I usually breakaway rope.

I have 1/2" 3/4" 7/8" and 1 1/8"

When my big horse is in top shape I use the 1/2". Right now he's in the 7/8". My little horse is 7/8", might go to 3/4" in peak shape - I use the same saddle on both.

The 1 1/8" we rope in. Not having to use double pads is soooooo nice!

*************I have a question for those of you who ordered your 5 star off of the 5 star equine website.

When choosing options: All of my options appear correct as I go through. When I am finished and add my pad to the cart, it appears to change the color of my pad to chocolate instead of natural. I am a little afraid to complete my order because all custom sales are final and I dont want to order the wrong options. Anyone had experience with this? Surely you can place an order over the phone to be sure its correct?

I have 6 - 5 stars 3/4, 7/8 and 1".  I use my 7/8" the most.  Go through Deanna (Rockyroad) she'll take care of you and better personal customer service than going through the website. IMO

Well crud I just deleted my one post telling you about Horse n Around Tack, lol. But anyway go to the sale page where saddles and tack are and Deanna has a banner at the top and her number should be there, I hope that her number is the same I know that she moved and has her plate full, but she is the only one I will order from. Here is two of my many pads that I have gotton from her, I have my brand on them. One is cow hide with hair on it.

Hey guys! I saw this posted by 5 Star's facebook in reference to pad width. I thought it would be useful to post on this thread. See below.

What size 5 Star Pad should I order?

Thickness will depend on length of time in the saddle, weight of rider, and the length of time spent riding. However, a general guideline to determine your pad thickness is listed below:

• 1/2" under pad - best for showing reining, cutting or pleasure horses when you still need protection, yet want to put a colorful blanket over the under pad for show purpose...s

• 3/4" - best for daily training sessions of 1 hour or less. Can be used under a VERY thin blanket to show

• 7/8" - best all-around thickness for regular use. Recommended for trail riding, team penning, cutting, reining, and barrel racing. Minimum recommended thickness for gear/rider weight combinations of 200 lbs. or more, or for rides of more than 4 hours at a time or over rough terrain.

• 1" - best for heavier riders or for especially long or hard use. Designed with ranch work in mind, for roping, performance, colt starting or heading to the mountains with lots of gear.

• 1 1/8" "Rancher" thickness - Specially engineered for ranch work, team roping, calf roping, steer stopping and performance.
Other factors to consider when determining your thickness:

How long will you be riding? If you ride more than four hours at one time on a regular basis, you need a pad that is at least 7/8" thick.

How much do you weigh? If you and your gear together weigh more than 200 lbs., you should get at least a 7/8" pad, but a 1" would be better.

What kind of terrain will you be riding on? If you regularly ride over mountainous or hilly areas, again, you want at least a 7/8" thick pad, but 1" would be better.

I buy mine in all 1 inches. I have 3 of them. There is one that is "labeled" a 1 inch but I swear it is thicker and like that one even better.

OT- I have seen a girl post a saddle pad for sale where she got the length shortened? She had it cut down so it was smaller. Has anyone seen or heard info on that?
