So I bought a different type of alfalfa pellets last week and my horse is not fond of them. He was eating them at first but go to where he wouldn't touch them at all. Still had bee eating drinking and acting normal. Tuesday night I noticed he was drinking weird, getting water in his mouth and spitting it out and had also not drank as much as normal. Last night no water had appereared to be drank and he had left all the alfalfa from that morning but ate his grain. So I only gave him grain this morning. He ate about 50% of the grain from this morning to this evening. He would eat it when hand fed but seemed depressed and and would just get mad when eating. Also still continuing to spit his water out. And has not pooped last night or tonight. He is out around 10 am-5 pm, otherwise in his stall. So normally there about 3-5 piles of poop per night.

I called the vet and vet said to give bute and bring him in tomorrow. I'm just looking to see if anyone has any suggestions. Do you think it could be stomach related? Blister beetles or ulcers? Could he have choked and it is causing him pain? Needlegrass? He does get coastal hay aswell.

Well I think he is getting some water in as he keeps drinking, just a lot of it comes out. He ate a little bit of grain from the time I made it home to get the bute and back out to the barn and also drank a small amount of water. I haven't checked his temp i do not know how. We are getting him to the vet first thing in the morning.

He could have something stuck in his throat. Has he choked? I know there was a girl on facebook that her horse choked and tore a hole in esophagus. Not trying to scare you, but with him spitting out water,I would be concerned.

Yes, looks like it's strangles

Which is interesting because his lymph nodes are swolled in his throat and he has a fever, but he has had no nasal discharge of any kind or any kind of cold like symptom. But blood test showed definite infection. Lots of penicillin and iv fluids.. If anyone has any timps on how to keep a horse quarantined from other horses back at my barn I woulld appreciate it. Anyone whose dealt with strangles before please share your story!

You are only going to keep this at bay when giving pen if he hasn't busted.  I would let it run it's course and after he has busted start the pen.  Gloves when handling horse and make him the last horse you handle.  If you handle horses in between, they could come down with it also.

The incubation period can be up to 3 weeks - usually about 2 weeks.

You should quarantine for 8 weeks after symptoms subside, as the horse can still be shedding the bacteria that causes strangles.

Been there done that!!

Hope he feels better- watch for swelling in the legs and abdomen, as this can indicate hemorragic (sp) purpura.

If they didn't do a culture, I would have the vet come out and take a nasal culture. Even if you don't see nasal drainage your horse may be contagious, all it takes is one little drop.

As I would be worried it could be something else.

As for isolation, nothing in or out of the stall, it is very hard to isolate as the bedding can harbour the bacteria. The wheel barrow can spread it, even your shoes can spread it.

With strangles USE NO ANTIBIOTICS AT ALL ... they will drive the strangles internally to lymph glands and create all kinds of abscesses ... it is called Bastard Strangles ...

This is one virus you keep them eating and drinking and DO NOTHING ... look for abscess between jaw bones ... when it starts draining use some medicated grease like Furazone to keep it open and fly proof ...
No bute .. you want to keep their immune attack system in full force!!

GOOD LUCK!!

I would follow your vets treatment plan, if you know and trust your vet, maybe run some of these ideas by them but ultimately I think medical professionals are your best bet.

I learned this the hard way.  I killed my college barrel horse by giving her anitbiotics when she had strangles.

I lost an untreated horse to bastard strangles.
I would follow vet's protocol.
So sorry you're dealing with this.

I have dealt with both types of strangles.

Normal strangles - I provided support and monitoring - allowing the disease to run its course, only help I gave was manually opening the infection with sterile needle and syringe and cleaning the wound afterwards.

Bastard Strangles- horse in the hospital with IV ABX and monitoring- he presented with fever and hemorrhagic purpura.

Both required an 8 week quarantine after my herd passed the incubation period.

I spent the better part of 4 1/2 months at home. Nobody wanted me to share and a lot of people I show with couldn't or wouldn't absorb what my vet bill ended up being.

Kept a lot of little girls from hearing it wasn't economical to spend that on their horse.

I lost a horse to bastard strangles thanks to an uneducated vet. I did keep it from spreading to any of the others in the herd tho just by being overly cautious with absolutely everything and using common sense. Even down to not spreading the sick horses' manure in the pasture where the others would be feeding, not using the same pitchfork, never letting watering hose or bucket touch. Had a separate bag of feed and scoop specifically for that horse. Bleached entire stall down constantly. Bleached trailer down inside and out after every vet visit. Kept halter and lead role seperate. Wore rubber boots in the stall (making his the last stall I went in) and used a garden sprayer with bleach water to spray them off thoroughly with as I stepped out of the barn (even so careful not to walk in yard where I might have other horses grazing). Rubber gloves. Best of luck

I will most definitley be following my vets treatment plan.. We sent off blood work today to be tested for which type of strangles he has.. He is still at the vet and will be until Thursday. So 6 days at the vet. The vets seem very confident in everything. I just like hearing everyone elses ideas and opinions. Thanks guys!
