Here is a new twist. I was putting potting soil into some large pots, shaking it out vigorously. As I emptied out the last bag a huge snake fell out. Yes, you read that right SNAKE. Since I was up close and personal I could see that it was a water moccasin. I was behind the table on my deck and had nowhere to go. Fortunately, he wasn't too hacked off and went over the side of the deck. Moral here is that you need to be more careful about the dirt in your pots than the dirt at the barrel race.

Let me get this straight.  It came out of an unopened back of potting soil or did it come out of your pot?

It fell out of the last bag of potting soil that I dumped into the pot. Scared the crap out of me but what is worse, he is hanging around the house somewhere. I get up at 5:30 to feed every morning. (in the dark) I have found my headlight!!!!

THAT is why I don't have plants and flowers. I keep my grass mowed real close around the house. All I have are a few bushes and 2 trees. But have also heard about snakes curled up in the bushes. I don't do snakes either. Have killed my share but they were mainly (I think) black snakes. Still gives me the creeps.
