Location: In my own world | For all those who have had serious injuries or may in the future, here is proof that sometimes miracles do happen!! I'll try to keep this short and I'll try to attach videos and pics, but I'm not good at it
Back in August a filly of mine (14 month old own daughter of FG) cut her leg very badly. I have no idea what on because I have no wire on my place. She was laying by the fence when I found her but not tangled up in it. I got her to the University and they did surgery to repair what they could. She cut pretty much all the way around, left the vein and the tendon on the back of the leg. She did have a small puncture to her tendon sheath. They asked me 2 different times if I wanted to put her down (before surgery and during surgery when they discovered the puncture) Since she was young and a granddaughter of DFP too I decided to give her a shot and raise some babies. They put a cast on her and said pray. they didn't think she had enough blood flow to her hoof and thought it would die and I would put her down within a week or so. Well recovered! Never a lame step! She stayed at the University for 6 weeks, came home, then back for 2 more. She has been on barn rest since August. Bandage changes every 4 days and developed intermitent stringhault. Arpil 4 she was given permission to go back out to pasture. It took me a few days to get the courage to turn her out. Since she severed the tendon that runs down the front of her foot I really figured she would just be a broodmare. But I don't know. Look at her move!! I am just happy to see her run. I am pretty sure she isn't in pain and have slight hope she might get to be a barrel horse. |

The amount of tears as been crazy. For the first few weeks I would just burst out anytime. Wondering if I was doing the right thing. Bandage changes were hard. I still don't know what she hurt herself on but I blame myself. And she showed such promise that I was heart broke her career ended before it started.
At some points I think my husband thought I needed medication. But I'm so happy to see she can be full of life. That's the spunk she always showed!!

Location: Sperry, OK | I know a lot of horses that have cut that long extensor tendon (on the font of the leg that attaches to the foot, to make them land on the bottom of the foot when they step and not on the front with it buckled under), and it has not stopped one from competing. Each end will scar tissue back to the bone and other than some cosmetic stuff, you will never know it happened. So glad you gave her a shot and she is doing so well for you!

Thanks! I've had several people tell me the same thing. And the vet said basically she will figure it out since she is young. But when I change her bandage now and see how she doesn't have much control it makes me wonder. But like the vet said. She has had this bulky bandage on for over 250 days. Once we get it off she will gain strength they think. Makes me a nervous mom. But just seeing her run and play makes me happy!! |
