I recently discovered it is bad for your horses? I guess I was unaware of this, or maybe just not well informed. Can anyone help me understand why...? I was told to use this by a vet for weight gain/hair coat on a yearling. Maybe she is "old school"? TIA
It will help them gain, yes. It can lead to inflammation though. A regular vegetable oil or stabilized rice bran supplement, like MaxEGlo are a bit better as fat additives.

yes, also I feed Gleam & gain 60 which puts a beautiful shine on my horses and it has the rice bran added as well as 60% fat. I buy them in smartpaks.
Vets are often far from nutritionists. I know my local ones would be pretty far off what is the correct way to to things. They spend most of their days working with cattle and ranch horses. But yes, there are a lot of things better than corn oil.
It's the type of fatty acid it provides. Corn is high in omega 6 which is believed to lead to inflammation. You want something that's higher in omega 3 than 6. Such as Flax for example.
