| How important is that, more important than starch levels? What's considered high? I'm looking at a feed that says 4% sugar 23% starch, and 27% NSC.. none of my horses have metabolic issues or anything like that, but I don't want to cause any either. | |

It depends a little on what form the starch is derived from, how much you will feed (meaning NSC in the entire diet), and what level and type of physical activity your horse will be at.
For a performance horse doing anaerobic work (barrel racing competitively), 4-8 lbs of a 27% NSC is generally not an issue. It can even be a good thing. As your horse exerts itself and depletes glycogen through heavy activity, increased and controlled starch from good sources will actually help keep his performance up through repetitive exercise or competition.
Oats are relatively 50-55% NSC and corn is 70-75% NSC. As you know, I feed a complete feed that is estimated at 18% NSC, so my horses receive approximately 18% NSC from 18-20 lbs of total feed rations or 3.6lbs of Nonstructural Carbohydrates daily. Because this starch is derived from mostly oats and alfalfa, this is very acceptable and healthy level for all horses that do not have a starch processing deficiency.

I feed a mix that is similar to the Bluebonnet feed you are looking at, my local feed mill makes it and I really love it. I do feed Omnis cubes for the most part but our racehorses and broodmares get this feed also and do great on it. Bluebonnet is a good company and I bet you would be very happy with that feed. | |

| Starch can be really important if you have a horse that is sensitive to it or is insulin resistant. You have to be careful of marketing. Safechoice origional is marketed as low starch but in actuality its 22% NSC. Ideally you want to keep levels at 15% or lower. Safechoice special care is 15% NSC. Compare that to say Purina Omelene which is 40%  | |

Soon as summer hits their workloads will definitely increase. I just want a good all around high fat, dry, good safe feed that I can feed everyone and not go broke doing so | |

All I feed is coastal and they are on a roundbale and pasture that's currently under water..so I had to go buy some squares to get us through. Yeah, I wouldn't want to have to feed more than a few lbs of grain at a time. Right now they get 4lbs a day split into two feedings so I'd like to keep that.
