I have a few old gag bits that I haven't used in quite a few years but I'm wanting to take them out of retirement. I was messing around with them and the gag sliding motion was very choppy! Not smooth at all and would've been disastrous if I put it on a horse before I messed with them. Any tips on how to clean them and make the gag action smooth again?
is it gooey crud that is messing with the action? If so throw it on the top rack of your dish washer for a cycle or two and that should clean it up.
Otherwise if there's rough spots on the metal itself you can lightly sand with a nail file on the shank part. If the mouth piece is also damaged I would just replace them.

Mouthpiece is good, still smooth and nice. And tried looking through that gag part to see if there was something stuck int here or if it was rusty and I didn't see anything noticeable really but I might try putting them through the washer, couldn't hurt right? They both are sweet iron mouthpieces though so how would that effect the bit?
Throw them in a bowl and cover them with Coke and let soak for 24 hours, then toss in the top rack of the dishwasher. The Coke will help dissolve any rusty spots.
My husband suggested using olive oil or vegetable oil cooking spray and spraying it on it. Would that be ok?
To keep sweet iron from rusting anything from bacon grease to used motor oil will work... lol

Tried the spray yesterday after the bits went through the washer and it worked like a charm! I probably would've tried the coke idea first but I don't have any in the house! Maybe I'll keep some around just for this use lol.
