I am going to be offering this mare for sale soon and would like to get some pricing advice from my BHW people. I dont want to over/under price her. What would you say is fair? I know there is a forum for that but it doesn't get a lot of hits.  Details to follow..    When I post her for sale proper pics will be taken :)

http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/little+bit+o+leo  Pedigree

2005 AQHA Mare
22% Leo
14.1 HH

Very broke super soft in the mouth, moves off your feet.
Very catty. HUGE MOTOR
Patterend on the barrels and entered only a couple of times. Ran in the 4D her first time entered with 300 entries, just cruised through. Bendy Style.
Is started well on the heel side. Was used to day work/ doctor calves before coming to the arena.
She has been turned out for a while but currently being legged back up.

I would say around 5k/6k, a little more if the area you live in sells pricier horses.

3,500. She's small, she's red, she's a mare and she's only in the 4D right now. Put feelers out via word of mouth you may find someone who's been looking for a horse just like her.

I've seen a quite a few of these types of horses listed from anywhere from $2500 to $8500. I would say if she is finished on the barrels and easy to ride and good trail horse, all around type, I would price her in mid range ($4500-5500). If she is tricky to ride or spooky or anything like that I would price her lower on that range. I wouldn't price her much above $5500just because of her size, not that it should matter but you have a smaller population I feel like.

ETA you also have the "plain jane" thing not in your favor. Again, it shouldn't matter but people tend to look passed the "plain red wrapper."

Do you have a better picture of her? We might price her more correctly if we could see her conformation better.

At that age, I feel you have to price the horse for what it is performance wise.  Not what it could be.  So, you have an 11yo mare runs 4D.  $3-5k

If you want more, you'll have to prove her - either in higher D's or in the roping pen.

Curious what the reason was she was turned out? My advice, is get her legged back up and get her to some races. Yeah she's a solid sorrel and small but she is CUTE!! Weak pedigree and 11 years old with really no "career". More races would help so she's more solid BUT, you will look at months more time on her to garner a higher price but then how much higher can you get with a couple more months? Depends on how talented she really is.  Right now, as she is I would say $3500 and willing to deal to the right home because bottom line is, she isnt finished in anything so is a 11 year old prospect in everything.

I'm the odd ball here I like the plain Jane red and bay horses and since shes super broke and ready to move on to a job and patterend on barrels and did work cattle, I would say 3500.00 to 4000.00, but she is a little shorter then I like, but I do like her looks and that she is ready to go. Just depends on whos looking and what they want to spend.

I'm a huge fan of the old Leo bred horses.
If I was wanting to raise babies for myself, I'd buy her and breed her.
She's super cute, good luck!

I have a toddler and usually only have time to ride 1. I have a finished horse, so that ride time goes to him . I had big plans for this mare but she keeps going on the back burner, which is why I have decided I need to let her go to someone who will use her. As far as her pedigree, it is not a barrel racing pedigree. Shes foundation bred.Realy old lines. The lady that owned The Money Depot (now standing and owned by JB Quarter horses) bred this little mare.

You do have a point. Nice size flashy geldings are what bring the $$.

Agree, I think I am going to have to buckle down and take her with me to the jackpots. I know she will move up in the Ds. I need to get her name in some results.

Typically a gelding will always sell higher around here. Mares still get a bad rap, although I think I've seen a very tiny improvement over the last 10 years.

Being a mare lover myself, and really liking a solid sorrel that's super short, I think she's pretty cool looking. I have no idea how to price her, but if I were shopping she would tick my boxes as far as size, color and being a mare and she'd be on my short list of horses to look at.

This is the path that I would take......roping or get someone to haul her to a few sortings and pennings....they like the smaller, "old" lines that will cow..... $3500-$4500 (as she stands

In my experience, it's not true as much with barrel racers, especially with barrel/running bred horses. But ranchers/ropers the geldings definitely bring more money.

A perfect example is the WYO Quarter Horse Sale every fall and spring. You can look up the results from the past several years and the geldings consistently way outsell the mares.

The same is true at production sales in East Texas that I have attended. Most horses consigned are cutting/reining bred or are for ranch use, roping, team penning, sorting. Cow horses. Geldings just do well. Add color they do even better. Mares bring a good price when they are proven or are great quality breeding stock.  HOWEVER from what I have seen in the barrel racing world (especially with futurity folks) mares seem to do just as well if not better than geldings. Obviously because of the potential to breed if the horse is successful. I dont think barrel racers care as much lol. Fast is fast no matter what sex the horse is.

I feel like there arent so many with her type of pedigree anymore. It takes a fan of old lines to appreciate her for that :)  And just curious, if she was yours what would you breed her to?
