Can horses get growing pains? My 4 y/o is really sore from the middle of his back to the top of his rump. I have noticed he's going thru a growth spurt. Butt high and really filling out. He's been sore in this area for the past few weeks. I've had massage and chiro done. Saddle fit is good. Both the massage and chiro person said he should be good to go, but still no improvement. Not sore in the legs. Just that back muscle that runs from the back to the top of his butt.
Anyone with experience with pain in this area on their horse? I do have plans to take him to the vet if still no improvement.

Thank you for any replies!

I would ask for lameness exam focusing on hocks, stifles, and X-ray for kissing spine. Good for you for being tuned into your colt!

If you are going on weeks of pain then growing would not be what I would blame it on. Something is up and its going to take more than just one chiro/ massage to fix it. I would run through the lameness exam for sure. Good luck!

I definitely suggest a vet trip. I had a big colt that would get sore mid back. Took him to the vet and they just said tight sore muscles and give him time off. Couple weeks went by and he loosened up and wasn't sore. The moment I started working him again he got sore and tight. Hauled him out of state to a lameness vet (there is a big difference) turned out he had a partial tear to sacral ligament.

What I've learned with horses, there is ALWAYS a cause and effect. Unfortunately back soreness can be a long list of issues and one just feeds off of the other.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I would make sure you are working him down as well... backs get sore if they are rode tight and not down and relaxed.. developing the back muscles is important and stretching but I  would have a vet check him out.. and it possibly could be kidneys  (infection or something )
